Silence is Golden

In this newsletter, we are going to rejoice in 'silence' and right to remain the same. Why do you invoke the right to remain silent? Why invoke your right not to be questioned without your lawyer present? In a nutshell, the answer to this question is: What you say and do is evidence, what your attorney says is not, writes attorney T. Edwin Walker, Vice-President/Attorney, Walker, Rice & Wisdom, P.C.

Taking Down the AK-47

Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov is an impressive name for a Russian peasant who never went beyond the 9th grade. After leaving school, he went to work for the Turkistan-Siberian railway. After being drafted into the Red Army in 1938, he completed the Tank Mechanical School near Kiev. Combined with Kalasnikov’s innate intelligence, the experience he gained there enabled him to devise several improvements for armored warfare. These included a counter for the number of rounds fired from a tank’s main battery as well as a meter that recorded a tank’s running time. His inventiveness caught the attention of C.I.C. General Georgi H. Zhukov, and Kalashnikov was ordered to Leningrad where his inventions were put into practice.

There were no problems with the Savage, except to get ourselves to stop shooting it. We liked it and its excellent accuracy a whole lot, and that’s ultimately what it’s all about.

We’ve come to like the lines of the Savages, because they give outstanding performance for the cost. Beauty is as beauty does. The clean lines of the Savage are due in part to the blind box magazine, with no floorplate.

The arrows point to the Weaver bases mounted with Allen screws by Savage. The scope was easy to mount, because the bases were already mounted by Savage. Note the excellent, clean-cut machining on and around the ejection port and action rail. The bolt was slick in operation.

This is the AccuTrigger, which is not only the best trigger we’ve experienced, but on some Savages can be adjusted by the shooter if he’s unhappy with it. We’ve never even considered changing one. This rifle showed the best accuracy of the trio with one brand of ammunition. Reason: The AccuTrigger was once again a joy, giving a clean and safe break at 2.5 pounds.

The tang safety moves silently to three positions. Back is safe, and midway permits unloading the magazine by cycling the bolt.
