Gun Tests Magazine Ammunition Testing Protocol

GunReports.com publishes the detailed ammo-testing protocol from Gun Tests magazine, the most commonly requested addition to Gun Tests coverage. Gun Tests' focus is on performance before the bullet hits the target. 'We realize that results from our test gun can’t be extrapolated to every possible gun readers might own, we wanted to test ammunition in a fashion most consumers would be able to duplicate, and in fact, should conduct on their own. But our framework can potentially save you money and time by narrowing the list of candidates you might try in your own gun, and you can also follow our system to see if a given round performs for you like it did for us.

Yeah?... Why?

Y'know, Remington, I really like technical information. I can read a time-vs-pressure graph. I can understand copper units of pressure, internal and external ballistics, and the physics of inertia & momentum. I have a rudimentary grasp of the fundamentals of metallurgy, heat transfer, and fluid flow. I even understand the concepts of entropy and enthalpy. It sure would be nice if this recall notice offered some of that stuff, instead of being written for somewhat dull 6th graders.

I blame the last 70 years of dumbing-down of American education for this bland, uninformative recall notice, which offers absolutely NO information about WHY this recall is necessary.

Curmudgeonly yours,

Gaviota

If the gun is bad, then you should get a full retail price refund, ditto for the ammo. Like Gaviota said this whole mess is vauge, and ambiguous, and not lucid enough.

So lets say you have all the info, time v pressure, ballistics, why the failure can occour, etc. What does that change? If the gun is dangerous, it's dangerous. Period.

Does this mean that the Remington 597 will not function safely with .17HMR ammo by other manufacturers?

What about the refund offer? Who can replace a box of 17hmr for $10? And I paid over $300 for my 597 hmr. How cheap can you get, especially when it is their fault. I have several Remington firearms, but I will have no more. Goatman

Very poorly done by Rem. At one time ammo was way over $10 a box, plus what about the cost to ship the ammo? Ditto for the rifle...$200 and you have to pay to ship it????

My comment is about the recall notice for Remington 17HMR ammo and 597 17HMR semi auto rifle. I'm not sure what is going on but this company is as cheap as can be. They are offering $10 for a refund on 17HMR ammo recall including shipping and $200 for their 597 17HMR rifle. Who can buy a replacement box of 17HMR ammo for $10? And I paid over $300 for my 597 17HMR. Looks likes this company is going down hill as far as I'm concerned. I will never buy anything Remington as long as I live.

Well, if you tend to believe what people tell you without question, I suppose you're right. I like to make my own decisions based on all available information, assuming that the info is as complete and accurate as possible. I use this decision making process when buying guns, voting in elections, and selecting wives. Y'know what I mean?

Besides, being curmudgeonly is all about annoying other people.

Gaviota

Today (8-20-09) I checked ou Remingtons web site and typed in 'recall notice', and there is'nt anything about this rifle, or the ammo, AND the info for other guns is concise and clear. The other guns were for the 1979 and earlier models 600-660 regarding triggers and safetys. My opinion is that this is a bogus notice NOT coming from Remington.

Lotoofla, If you go to Remington.com; there is a recall alert in orange in the middle-right of the page. Hope this helps.

I'm with you, Gaviota. Just 'cause some tard managed to stick a squib in the bore and shred his face with a quick follow up shot (resulting in a magnificent out of court settlement) I ain't gonna let Remington's pinch-ass corporate lawyers screw me out of a perfectly good rifle! If they want to convince me otherwise they'll need to do more than post a "orange alert" and shoot off a dumbass press release. Now how's that for curmudgeonliness!

You bring honor to the Code of the Curmudgeon, Chuck. Well done!

Gaviota

I'm with you curmudgeons all the way! So, how can one join?

Curmudgeonliness is a skill set that may be difficult for some to acquire. You need to be; *stubborn and set in your ways *suspicious of anybody representing authority *keen sense of smell *good grasp on the obvious *moderate a$$holiness There are other conditions of certification that I can't remember (oh, yeah, flickering memory recall helps too) but maybe Gaviota can fill in more attributes for Gunsdontkill to consider...

LMAO! That's about the funniest &^%$ I ever heard, Chuck. My wife says I'm ALL of those things. Could I have been a curmudgeon all these years and not know it?

Lets see,$250.oo,for a $400.00 rifle,$10.oo for a box of $12.99 ammo,Its a good way to boost sales.Why would I replace a defective REMINGTON with another Remington?Thankful for Savage Arms

I just spoke to a customer service rep at Remington and they are currently swapping out the barrels and converting this rifle to 22WMR at no cost

Call them @ 1-800-243-9700 option #3 and have your serial # number ready to have them send you a postage paid mailing label

Good Luck!

Michael

Thanks Michael,I called 01-15,and indeed Remington will replace 17hmr for a 22mag barrel. The receiver stays the same and it will not be a semibull barrel, but maybe it will go bang Robert L.
