Three Pocket Guns Compared from Kahr, Chiappa, and Springfield

(GunReports.com) — Austin Miller, contributing editor for Gun Tests magazine and a contributor to GunReports.com, traveled to Tactical Firearms in Katy, Texas, to begin testing a unusual trio of handguns for an upcoming issue of Gun Tests.
We compared three guns with different chamberings, but, amazingly, almost the same size, height, and weight profiles.
The test guns start with this Chiappa Firearms Rhino Revolver, on loan to Gun Tests from Fountain Firearms in Houston. Chambered in 357 Magnum/38 Special, the 200DS model has a counter price of $795 at Fountain, and Cheaper Than Dirt! sells it for $765.
The second gun is the new Springfield Armory XD-S single-stack .45 ACP. Springfield's MSRP for the black XD-S is $599, and the suggested retail for the bi-tone unit is $669, according to Springfield's customer service department.
This particular pistol was provided to us by Gun Tests Product Coordinator Kevin Winkle. He won't set his retail price for the gun until we're done with our testing. Also, Cheaper Than Dirt! hasn't listed the gun for sale yet.
We saw a factory new XD-S with a "buy it now" price of $475 at auction recently. A common counter price seems to be around $500 to $510.
The third pistol is a pocket 9mm produced by Kahr Arms, the CW9. Product Coordinator Kevin Winkle also supplied this gun. Cheaper Than Dirt! lists this Kahr Arms CM9093 for $378.
The Gun Tests story angle will compare these three dissimilar — but similar — self-protection handguns for accuracy, recoil control, and concealability. We were surprised to see how they compare in size:
The Rhino has a 2-inch barrel wrapped inside an aluminum-alloy frame. It’s 4.9 inches tall and 6 inches long, overall. At the widest point, it’s 1.42 inches across its flattened six-shot cylinder. It weighs 26 ounces empty, and with six rounds of 125-grain 357 Magnum rounds, it weighs 29.2 ounces.
The XD-S holds 5+1 rounds of 45 ACP, equalling the capacity of the Rhino. It measures 4.4 inches tall with a magazine inserted.
It’s 6.3 inches long, and Springfield says the overall width is 1 inch. However, we measured the thickness across the takedown lever to be 1.07 inches.
Dry, it weighed 22.6 ounces, and loaded with six 185-grain hollowpoints, our scale read the gun’s weight at 26.4 ounces.
The Melonite-treated barrel is 3.3 inches long, and it resides in a steel slide and polymer frame.
The Kahr Arms CM9 9mm has a 3-inch barrel and, like the others, a 6-round capacity. It measures 5.42 inches in overall length and stands 4 inches tall.
It’s only .9-inch-wide across the slide and weighs a paltry 17.6 ounces with an unloaded magazine and 20 ounces loaded with six rounds of 115-grain ball.
Like the XD-S 45, the CM9 fires double-action only, while the Rhino fires both double action and single action. The CM9’s black polymer frame is topped with a 416-stainless-steel slide.
So that sets up the three-way comparison we’re working on, but today we’re going to examine the unusual Rhino more closely.
The design is the fusion of ideas from two Italians, Emilio Ghisoni, the deceased designer of the Mateba revolver, and Italian competitive shooter Antonio Caduzzo.
At first glance, we thought the Chiappa Rhino could be cast as a gun from a sci-fi action flick. Its unusual appearance is due largely to lowering the barrel of the revolver to the bottom chamber instead of the customary alignment with the top chamber.
The idea is that by lowering the barrel in the hand, muzzle flip is reduced, allowing the shooter to execute follow-up shots with magnum rounds faster.
Introduced in 2010, the Rhino is now available in 2-, 4-, 5- and 6-inch variants, in .357 Mag., 40 S&W, and 9x21. One model, the 2-inch-barrel 20DS, comes in a hard-chrome finish.
Our shooters wanted to see if the Rhino lives up to its promises of reduced muzzle flip and faster reacquisition of the target with magnum loads in an aluminum-framed, 2-inch snubby without a muzzle brake.
At the range, we chose to test the Rhino at 7 yards, a reasonable distance for a 2-inch revolver.
We started out with 38 Special to get a feel for the single-action trigger pull and grip angle. The first shot shooting supported off the bench was a surprise.
Expecting some muzzle flip, we instead tracked the sights on target and were able to pull the hammer back with the off hand and fire off five more rounds quickly and accurately.
Moving up to .357 Mags, we noticed a lot of report and more felt recoil increased, but it was surprisingly easy to track the sights and reacquire the target.
A six-shot double-action group measured 3 inches, which is respectable for any snub-nosed revolver.
The double-action trigger pull is smooth but weighs in at a pretty heavy 11 pounds. The trigger was flat and broad and pulled at just 3.8 ounces single action with a tiny bit of creep.
So that’s our initial look at the Rhino 200DS 357 Magnum revolver from Chiappa. Look for the full comparison of the Rhino versus the Springfield XD-S and the Kahr CW9 in Gun Tests magazine.
I was taught that you never close a revolver's cylinder by flipping it shut! See 4:30 in the video. The gun is on loan; if someone did that to one of my guns they'd never touch one again! Also, black guns against the back background of his shirt don't show much detail. I picked up a Chiappa at a gun show recently, the grip is also very different from most revolvers, much better imho. Wonder if they will ever make it in 45 ACP? A full size version would make a great house gun. Agreed, Tubatoad. I was taught that the nonchalant flipping of a revolver cylinder could possibly result in damage to the cylinder, the crane, or the base pin due to the forces involved in snapping the cylinder into place. As far as I know, accepted procedures for opening and closing revolver cylinders involve a gentle push from the right side of the gun to open, and a gentle push from the left side until it locks, to close. I have to verify the statement that flipping the cylinder is poor practice. I had a .38Cal revolver that I habitually flipped shut. One day at the range a guy from a couple of targets down told me he was getting metal shavings each time I fired. Apparently the flipping had caused my cylinder to become out of alignment with the barrel. Any else old enough to remember Broderick Crawford in the 50's tv serial "Highway Patrol"? Show intro had ol' Broderick spinning the loaded cylinder on his S&W Model 10 snubby and ker-slapping it shut with a wicked twist of the wrist...I was only like 6 years old watching re-runs but still remember thinking that was soo awesome! Well, that and how he could snap off 9 rounds from the hip and blow out a tire on a moving car 50 yards away...so began a lifelong fascination with all things that go boom or zoom. Yeah, I remember those old "Highway Patrol" shows, and the nonchalant way that old Broderick Crawford flipped his snubby closed. Actually, there were a number of shows of that same type, like "Dragnet" and "Racket Squad" in which the characters all, or most of the time, demonstrated poor gun handling procedures. On another tack, I was always amused that a guy as portly as Crawford could run, dodge, and jump while he was beating the stuffings out of bad guys.....especially on the hill with the "HOLLYWOOD" sign. Starting at about 4:04 of the video, Kevin flicks his wrist to slam the cylinder closed on the Rhino. Really bad form. He has just lost all credibility with me for any test he does. If the guy doesn't even know how to treat a firearm, how can I trust his analysis? Why do people want to flick the cylinder closed? Because they saw it in the movies of course. Unless you are told by the gun dealer or read an article such as this, how else would you know not to? As for the article itself, pretty useless and misleading. I don't need an article to tell me the specs of guns that I can go get off a website direct from the manufacturer. I was looking for the comparison, the reason(s) one is or isn't better than the other. None of that is here; very misleading and disappointing. The mag release button took a 2-thumb press to unlatch and the mags had to be pulled free instead of the usual dropout. I almost returned it as defective. I guess you get what you pay for... Interesting experience, Slipstick. I have a PM9, with which I have had very few problems. I did have to put the recommended 200 rounds through it before it fed, fired, and ejected properly, but I have never had difficulties with the magazine catch or the magazines ejecting the way they are supposed to. As you say....."Guess you get what you pay for", so I'd guess that might explain the difference in price between the PM9 and the CM9. I sorta wondered why there was such a variation. I know it's already been said but if that was my revolver I would beat him with it.... Have we checked the magazines for burrs or deformities as well as the magwell itself? Does it eject properly without ammo in it or when half full, but not at full capacity? I have various handguns that seem to work fine when half fool or less, but not as expected when at capacity. I've tried non-oil based lubricants on the mags and inside the well to some satisfaction. The release itself may have a burr or just need to be lightly polished / sanded; might be a bit too tight. As is well known, the less expensive the more injection parts, especially if polymer, greater the odds of a not so finely tuned machine. It never hurts to contact the manufacturer with a well written, respectful letter; miracles can be had, I know from experience. I had a manufacturer buy a weapon back directly from me, sent me a full price refund, cost me $0, just some time doing correspondence. @canovack & smithkowitz: The PM9 looks similar to the CM9, but the PM is a much different and higher quality piece. It also costs $100+ more (and it shows...) I checked one out at a local LEO store and the mag release is the standard removable coil spring and cam. The CW9 uses a (very) stiff leaf spring. I also had to sand and polish the inside of the grips where the mag touches to get the mags to drop free, even full. (They are stainless and smooth.)It's reliable, now, but off the shelf, unless you like to tinker, (and I do) spend the extra c-note and get the PM. I had read in one of the gun magazines that the CM9 is less pricey than the PM9 because of some of the features that distinguish the two pistols. I don't recall what those differences were, but what you are relating, Slipstick, sounds familiar. I don't mind tinkering with guns.....In fact that is one of the great pleasures of gun ownership. I do, however, expect a firearm to do pretty much what it is supposed to do right out of the box. I accept that a pistol, like the PM9, comes with a written recommendation to put 200 rounds through it before carrying it as a life saving device. That said, however, it should still load and unload without much fuss. ...and then, when you spend more than twice as much (like my SIGs,) everything works right out of the box...Oh well. @lotus143 all of you idiots buying gold, your a slide of a pen away from the very same thing happening to you. Gold? What Gold? We d'on own no steenkin' Gold... Well, Slipstick, as you noted on 6 September, "I guess you get what you pay for"..... I fully agree, and it does get pretty obvious that when we spend the money for SIG Sauer products, we get functioning, accurate reliability right out of the box. I am, and have been for several years, a big fan of SIG Sauer. While I like to carry a variety of pieces, depending on my preferences, by far, my favorite carry pieces are SIGs. As I write this, a SIG P229, .357 SIG is nestled in a Blackhawk! SERPA holster on my right hip. It has XS big dot express tritium sights along with a Lasermax guide rod laser. This baby is my usual "go to gun". I have also purchased a .40 S&W barrel for it in the event that I might need to swap calibers for some unforeseen reason. Extra plus is the same Crossbreed holster fits my SIG and my XDm. My usual carry piece is an Interarms Walther PPK. the others are for when I know I'm going someplace bad on purpose. 'Sounds workable..... In my town, it can, and does get rough on occasion, and I have long ago taken to carrying substantial ordnance, along with a back-up piece. I have owned PPKs, but I had some problems with slide scrapes on my hand, even though my hands aren't particularly meaty. I'd guess that I just like to have my hand as high on the grip as possible, so I like some clearance between the slide and my skin, as I grasp the pistol. All of the medium to large frame SIGs are fine for my grip style. The Kahr PM9 I carry as a back-up has sufficient distance between the slide and my hand, so it's not a problem. I'll stick with those that say: Made in the USA: Kahr, S&W, Ruger, Kimber some of the more well known that I own. My all steel Kahrs have given me zero troubles, I cannot say the same about the one Sig I own, a P238. As some of us have mentioned, you pay less, odds are you get lower quality somewhere; it can however be rectified as mentioned. Seriously, I am not too concerned about needing to load a second magazine in a self defense scenario. If it's that crazy of a situation, I will probably be seeking my way out of the mess, not confronting it head on. If I were heading to a place where I thought I might be in need of much fire power, I would have brought something other than the CW9, the Kahr MK40 or S&W M&P40C, more reliable, more power and similar or more capacity. Smithkowitz: What you said - in its entirety. I have had not trouble with my K40 and have put thousand of rounds through it. I can draw from concealment, point shoot, and hit my target up to 50 yards away (not that I would need to point shoot at that distance, mind you). And being raised as a revolver guy, the K40 has what I value second most (after reliability) in an auto - a revolver trigger. As has been said by others before me: if I knew when I would need to use my pistol, I would be standing behind a deputy sheriff, and if I knew where I would need to use my pistol, I would choose to be elsewhere. So, I carry what I find gives me confidence in its ability to do the task. Of course, YMMV... Amen, Smithkowitz. My Kahr is a "car" gun. It and the PPK are there for use long enough to get out of Dodge or get to something with more capacity. @Canovack, I have had similar slide bite issues with the PPK, but not much.
