SHOT Show Video: Springfield Armory’s new XDS 45

February 6, 2012

(GunReports.com) — Gun Tests’ Contributing Editor Roger Eckstine found Springfield’s brand-new XDS .45 at the Media Range Day at the SHOT Show a couple of weeks ago. The micro-sized XDS was secret, and no one knew that the gun, smaller than a Glock 36, existed until media members showed up and saw the 4-inch-tall .45.

Roger learned from world-class shooter Rob Leatham how easy it was to shoot this tiny gun with control and accuracy. With the iPhone 4S camera rolling, Roger knocked down steel plates with the tiny XDS.

The gun has a slide less than an inch wide. With a 5-round mag inserted, the gun weighed 30 ounces. With a barrel length of 3.3 inches, it’s half an inch shorter than the Glock 36. In Gun Tests evaluations, the 36 hasn’t done so well because it’s hard to shoot, but Roger said the XDS is smooth and controllable.

Springfield representatives couldn’t quote a price for the .45, which if it does well in future testing, might truly be suitable for carry in a pocket holster, in place of a .380.As noted, the stainless steel magazines have 5-round capacities, and the 3.3-inch barrel is Melonite coated and fully ramped. The trigger-pull range is said to be from 5.5 to 7.7 pounds. OAL is 6.3 inches and the height is a scant 4.4 inches.

Not to be overly critical, but did anyone preview this video before its posting. A little better sound would be nice.

For those who are not big fans of the Glock series of pistols, this could be a viable option.

How about a 9mm version?

just want the updates.

Your right on about the Glock M36. I have had one for some time now and can't get it into any configuration that is comfortable! Bad design for sure. The new XDS seems to fit the bill much better. One more round in a tad longer magazine would be nice.

Well, since it appears that Glock will NEVER produce a slim, single stack pistol of any type, size or caliber, I will definitely jump on this one. I love my Glocks, have carried them off-duty for years, but,,, I'm kinda getting tired of that blocky, thick, uncomfortable design. So, I carry my Springfield Champion .45 a lot. But this new Springfield would be SWEET to carry anywhere!

Hopefully Springfield will develope a mag xtension like on the compact models for this thing. I like the flush fitting 5rd but a 6 or 7rd backup mag would be cool not just for extra capacity but more comfortable grip.

Those of us who believe in Springfield Quality, Accuracy, and Reliability, not to mention their unmatched Warranty, have already signed up with our deposit to receive a new XDS-45.

For a couple of years, I've used the XD-40SC as a concealed carry weapon. And, I expect the new XDS to become my main carry pistol.

It's humorous to me how people will complain about the limitation of 5 rounds, or the weight, or the grip safety, or a hundred other things. I wanted to know the brand, the caliber, and I was sold! xd-fan

I was immediately sold, which means, from experience, I should wait two years before buying.

yoyodoc, We read these blogs to get other shooter's opinions on the pistols. I merely gave you my humble opinions. You can take it or leave it! Everybody doesn't love the XD line, but a good number of us folks do. XD-45 Tactical, XD-40 SC, S&W 38 wheel, S&W 357 wheel.
