Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer

AAG Lanny Breuer Blames
Second Amendment For
"Gun Walking" Mistakes

November 8, 2011

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com) -- During a recent Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who is facing pressure surrounding his role in the Obama Justice Department’s Operation Fast and Furious, asked for more gun control and blamed law abiding gun shop owners for violence in Mexico.

Breuer declared that nearly 70 percent of guns found in Mexico come from the United States, a figure that has been disproven by the National Rifle Association, FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and by Senator Charles Grassley’s office multiple times.

Also during testimony, Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein pushed for more gun control and Breuer expressed his agreement with her statements that American gun laws are too “lax” and therefore result in more violent crime.

What a lying piece of crap! That goes for the Wicked Witch of the West, Feinstein, as well!

A real Maroon!

Apparently Lanny didn't get the memo...he's trying to proceed with the next phase of this dumb plan...the ATF was going to blame the whole fiasco on the gun dealers and the 2nd Amendment...but they were BUSTED before they could implement. ThisTWERP needs to be CANNED!!

What's a maroon?

It's not the politically appointed bureaucrats or their idiotic policies...

It's the GUNS, stupid!

What a scum bag! He invents an artificial means by which his people can violate existing gun laws and has the temerity to say our gun laws are too lax after his scheme blows up in his face?! Why is he not in custody awaiting trial?

'Same sentiments..exactly. For being part of an administration with little to NO transparency, this goof-ball is totally transparent. How can anyone deliberately violate the laws that their agency is supposed to enforce, and when it all heads south blame it on the laxity of enforcement of the laws? This moron is typical of the left-wing cronies that are thrusting their version of life on all of us. Their heads need to roll.

@Buck1911 & Canovack: Because this is the land of the (formerly) free and the home of the PC...

To paraphrase John Belushi in Animal House: "We're PROGRESSIVES. We can get away with ANYTHING!!!"

pspablo - "maroon" is what Bugs Bunny always calls Elmer Fudd in the cartoons. It a mis-pronunciation of 'moron'.

He needs an enema to clear his mind!

"It looks like someone, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, is falling on a sword, and that sword happens to be Eric Holder’s." OK, and so then Holder falls on his own sword, or Obama's? It certainly can't stop with Breuer or we'll just have more of this illegal crap next year.

This stonewalling crap is doing more to harm the credibility of the Obama administration than if these creeps would just come clean. Unfortunately, the knot-heads who put these people into power likely see nothing wrong with it. Keep encouraging your representatives to keep up the pressure on these miscreants. This thing has got to blow soon, and when it does, the left-wing socialists who presently run things in DC will, hopefully, be in the first line of casualties.

How much worse will this stuff get if O'Bama gets reelected? A whole lot.A final term President with nothing to lose, watch out.

Same old story of "we make the rules, we can break the rules. DEAN O is correct. If Obama gets in for a second run all hell is sure to break loose.

Same old story of "we make the rules, we can break the rules. DEAN O is correct. If Obama gets in for a second run all hell is sure to break loose.

I hate to say it folks but unless you get rid of Cain and send his ass back to the cotton field where he belongs, you are gonna be faced with Obama vs Cain. In the end, we ALL loose. I will be moving to Guatemala.

"...send his ass back to the cotton field where he belongs..."? Cecil S., please don't interject racist comments into a dialogue about gun control and gun rights. FYI, I am not a fan of either Obama or Cain, and I am not black.

Didn't sound racist to me. Plenty of dumb ass white folks have picked cotton for a living.

Two points: First, it was Breuer and the other bureaucrats in the Executive branch who came up with this (previously failed) idea and who then violated and conspired to violate these supposedly "lax" gun laws and compelled innocent citizens to go along with this illegal scheme. Hopefully in the future Breuer and his ilk will be facing criminal charges. Second, this pat-me-on-the-back anti-gun love fest was held before a Senate (i.e. Democrat-controlled) committee. Feinstein is the second most anti-2A Senator (only to Babs Boxer, her "partner in crime"). If Breuer tried to peddle his five pounds of crap in a one pound bag in front of Issa's House committee, I tend to think that the result would be appreciably different.

Cecil, my grandfather grew cotton on a real small farm and picked it along with help from his seven children. Each of those children went to college in part on cotton profits and that work ethic. "Dumb ass?" I don't think so.

Visigoth, I was not saying that people that pick cotton are dumb asses. I was saying that Cain is a dumb ass and should probably be picking cotton cause that is all I think he is worth. And picking cotton is very hard work. But I was pointing out that some white people have picked cotton and some were dumb asses, not for picking cotton but because they were born that way. Picking cotton didn't have anything to do with it. I was trying to point out that I think Cain is one and that is where he should be.

Cecil, I am a bit surprised at your judgment of Herman Cain. After all, he has made a pretty good run of his life, ascending to some pretty high places in corporate America. While it remains to be seen who the GOP will ultimately nominate to oppose BHO, I don't think that Cain or any of the front-runners can truthfully be called dumb asses, and be relegated to some sort of menial occupation, honorable though it be.

Well Colonel, I personally think that Cain is a snake in the grass. He is arrogant, mean spirited and just plain nasty. And there is still a lot about him that has not come out. I keep asking, "did Cain's rise through the corporate ladder have anything to do with Affirmative Action"? No response anywhere. And for the last 15 years, he has been a talk show host and motivational speaker. I am not enamoured with either profession. And the pizza deal was not REALLY that much of a success. Sorry to disappoint but it is just the way I see it. Of course, I am not in love with Bachman or Perry or The Newt either. Man, I am just getting grouchy. Seems we can't find a real leader any more.

Hope you got a little rain. I am loving this cooler weather.

Well, Cecil, it does seem that it is becoming somewhat disheartening to see that the Republican field of contenders hasn't really produced a clear winner.....who can actually win! That said, remember back in 1976 when the Democrats had nobody to send up against Jerry Ford? The selection went all the way to the party convention, when in walked a peanut farmer whose credentials included being governor of Georgia. The rest is history, as Jimmie Carter joined the ranks of such luminaries as Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. So, take heart old friend, we may yet find somebody who can take on BHO and win.

We got a little rain.....emphasis on LITTLE. Yes, it finally has cooled down. My birdbaths even had a thin sheet of ice last week. Now I am cleaning out the greenhouse of all the junk I put in it over the summer, so my wife's plants can have a safe place when the weather really does cool down.....a lot.

One can only hope Colonel. By the way, were you still in the Nam when they had Operation Lan Som 719? I think that was the name. Anyway, it was a max effort by our choppers to get the ARVN out of harms way. I am sure you know of it. My hat is sure off to those guys. What a clusterf***.

My tour in Vietnam was with the 4th Inf Div from March 1969 - February 1970. I believe the goat screw 719 took place well into the so-called efforts at Vietnamization of the war and was around 1971 or 72. There was recently a very good series presented on FX by the title Vietnam War in HD. I don't know if there are any reruns out there, but if you can find it someplace, it's a pretty good accounting of the war told by actual veterans. 719 is recounted in pretty accurate detail.

Yes Sir, I caught it the other night. I immediately thouht of you and if you had to participate. We really screwed the pooch on that one I think, although, I am amazed at the number of items, made in Viet Nam that are showing up in the U. S. They Valero cigarette lighters come from there as well at clothing, etc. AND, a lelated well with for Veteran's Day. Thank you.

Yeah, Cecil.....it's sort of a funny thing about Vietnam. I will always have a place in my heart for it. Some of the worst and best times of my life were lived in Vietnam. To this day, when I see that something is manufactured in Vietnam, if it's something that I'm looking for, I'll buy it. Not so with things made in China. I am also partial to Vietnamese folks who became American citizens.....not the ones who run in gangs, but the honest, hard working folks who came here seeking a better life than they could ever find back home.

When I was teaching, one of the teachers who was under my supervision was Vietnamese. She was born the same time I was in country in a village that was in the 4th Inf Div AO. I often wondered if I had come close to her when I was in country. Though she has moved to another state with her American husband and children, we still maintain contact.

A very cool story Colonel. I always thought but am sometimes not inclined to say that I think we sort of stuck it up the asses of the people of Viet Nam. After all, most of them just wanted to have the same thing we have. You really are a real American hero sir. And I too will buy their products.

Every member of our nation's armed forces who went to Vietnam and did their duty with honor, integrity, and courage is a hero, Cecil. Often, we felt like we were boxers thrown into the ring, with at least one hand tied behind our backs, to fight against a no holds barred raving lunatic. If the politicians had just turned us loose to do what we do best, we could have made short work of that whole mess, and we would still have a strong American presence right on the border of Red China. Burma would likely still be Burma instead of Myanmar. The killing fields of Cambodia would likely have been productive rice paddies. Laos would likely be run by Montagnards and Hmongs. And Thailand would be a tourist mecca for more than just drug dealers. But, hind sight is always a bit better than what we see at the time we are struggling along with our own self-imposed handicaps. The trouble is that we haven't learned a damned thing from the lessons of history.

Amen Colonel. Very eloquently stated and right on target. I have argued those facts for many years but to no avail. Hell, my sort of step daughter who was born in 82 once stated, "we fought a war in Viet Nam?" Funny that we don't places more emphasis on history. Maybe we could stay out of some of these quaqmires. But I dream.

So, why does not the NRA have members of congress sign a pledge to not support ANY gun control as did Grover Norquist with the tax deal?

@Cecil S: Because congresscritters are interested in one thing above all else--getting reelected. Us gun owners just aren't numerous or vocal enough to move an entrenched liberal machine that far to the right.

I am sure you are correct Slip. AND, they are too busy engaging in the insider trading that was exposed on "60 Minutes" last Sunday. Why is this country not up in arms over that little tid bit of information?

The members of the elite Potomac Country Club, AKA US Congress, are some of the most abusive members of American society extant. With all of the perks and privileges they enjoy, it boggles the imagination that they keep carrying their self-aggrandizement to the extremes that they do. Alas, we poor peons are never likely to change any of that. Even the most dedicated, forthright, candidates who pledge reforms are ultimately corrupted to the lavish lifestyles of a body of people who will never relinquish their power to keep on increasing their patrician ways.

I don't know why our interests get so little attention. With some 80 million gun owners out of roughly 300 million people, that means that we are nearly 50% of the adult population or maybe more - since 300 million includes all the children who can't legally decide to own or not own guns and can't vote either. It would seem to me that if 50% of adults (aka potential voters) were talking with one mouth about anything else - Medicare, Social Security, peace in our lifetimes, or even skinning and stuffing presidents who commit felony crimes - that Congress would soil itself trying to give us what we want.

Our problem is this - if the guy in the room with a gun so much as shows it to get attention paid to his interests, he's suddenly the poster-boy for the entire anti-gun agenda. But if we try to quietly or politely press our interest, we're shouted down - by the other half of the room, and our numbers are ignored. So, I think the question becomes "how do we call attention to the fact that gun owners are 1 out of 2 adults?". Once we are able to make THAT point, it may be unnecessary to make the point that we are the armed half.

I am really becoming more and more disillusioned. Of course, I am 69 and won't live long enough to see any meaningful change. It appears that the 30-40 crowd don't really pay attention or give a rats ass so I guess I need to just shut up and enjoy my dogs while I am still able to do so. What a shame.

I agree with your reasoning, david b. It appears to me that simply being a major voting block is not sufficient reason for our Congressional representatives to respond to our concerns and cause. As most of us suspect, money is what makes an impression on Congress. We, as individual members of a voting block, can talk until we are blue in the face, but when our money enters the picture, we may have a louder voice. What I am getting at here is membership in pro-Second Amendment organizations. If the NRA was to morph from an organization of 4 million to an organization of 80 million dues paying members, I suspect that many Congressional ears would begin to hear what the NRA tells them. Right now, the NRA is the most powerful lobby in Washington, so just think what power we could gain if all of the lazy, "let the other guy do it", gun owners put their money where their mouths are. It is completely mind boggling that 80 million gun owners don't care enough about preserving their rights, when they are content to privately complain about something that they DO have the ability to influence. Now, for those out there who are pissed off at the NRA for one reason or another..... Get over it. You cannot steer the leadership of any organization by resigning your membership. You CAN make a difference if you join the organization and communicate your concerns and desires to that organization.

C.A.Novack Lt Col, US Army (Ret) NRA Benefactor Life Member

Well said, Sir! I salute you, Colonel. Also, thank you for your service.

I'm not going to say this as a disagreement, but rather out of frustration. IF the NRA could morph into an 80 million membership organization we'd get our way, yes. But IF Congress-critters could manage to find some moral spine and also study the Constitution, we wouldn't need that. I don't really expect or hope for either.

On the other hand, I recall that the Watts riots and the Black Panthers had a lot to do with the passing of the Civil Rights Act, and it wasn't through paid memberships in NAACP but because white people suddenly became afraid and squeezed their representatives HARD to get something done - and also because the Speaker (LBJ at the time) called a night-time session and locked the doors until something got passed. But he did that because of the fear, not because of his high level of love for his black brothers.

So I think that if the D.C. whores were more aware that we are the ARMED half of the voters, we might get more respect. I'm not suggesting any threats or actual actions - but I am saying that if they were more fearful of us we'd get more of what we want.

I know - that fear is what drives the anti-gun folks - but that only works for them because we do nothing but protest that we aren't violent, while they insist that ANY gun is dangerous because of the danger of any ONE gun being used. I think we need more of "back off because yes I'm armed and because no I don't like being compared to psychos and criminals". I believe they all need a healthy dose of "yes, I'm a gun owner, and a peaceful one. But if you want to actually see me get ugly, then try to take my guns. If you want me to continue being nice, leave me alone.".

Sorry, just venting really. But I do believe there's some kernel of truth in there too.

I have similar leanings. I can't shake the feeling that we can all expect the 'midnight kick-in-the-door visit' from the friendly folks in DC, sooner or later. They CAN'T let us retain the means to remain free and continue to push their repressive agendas. My Grand parents (from Mother Russia) told me stories of the midnight knock...who would have thought it could happen here?

I've said it before. I fear nothing but my own government.

There are some interesting and seemingly valid opinions and concerns being voiced in this forum under this particular discussion thread. I believe that many of us have acquired a number of firearms, in excess of our usual needs, as a hedge against that fearsome time when we may find that our Second Amendment has been truly gutted and thrown down the sewer. Those of us who are veterans and gun owners have already been identified as potential terrorists, so it really isn't too much of a stretch of the imagination to assume that this very forum is being tapped.....first perhaps as a means of sensing the national mood, and later as a means of locating those who are most vocal in these discussions. It may well be that we will find ourselves uttering famous words such as....."These are the times that try men's souls". It is up to us to exhaust every conceivable avenue and method of peaceful effort so that our nation can continue to endure in the manner that our founding fathers intended. The alternative is too terrifying to allow it to even enter our cognitive powers.

Well put Colonel. But then, you ARE the most eloquent in our group.

I get sick in my gut if I think too hard about that loathsome day when free patriotic Americans have to defend themselves against other Americans. Yet I see signs... and I fear that day approaches steadily because those others have too much fear of our desire to keep our freedom and too little respect for us or it.

I just hope they don't send the SEALS after me.

It really doesn't matter who they send after us. The end result will still be the same. Yes.....It will be a loathsome day when Americans engage other Americans in a life and death struggle in defense of our freedoms. I, however, still hold out the hope that the military commanders who took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution will remain true to that oath and will not lift a mailed fist against the very citizens they are charged to protect. If my hopes should somehow be unfounded and dashed to the ground to be trampled under the boots of our own armed forces, we will truly be witness to Armageddon.

What a quandry that would be. Next time it is on TV, be sure to watch an old movie called "7 Days in May". It has been on a couple of times in the last 6 months.

I've noticed that cable channels often select movies that have currently topical content, regardless of how old the movie might be.

Yeah. I am waiting for "Bad Santa" to run again.

"Seven Days In May" is a pretty old movie, but like so many, it is timeless in its' message. I also read the book just before it came out on film. While today's situation is a bit different from that portrayed in "Seven Days", it does provide some insights into what mechanisms would likely come into play if we found ourselves in a crisis with a federal government run amok.

I particularly liked Ava Gardner. She owned a home on the hill overlooking out Air Force housing in Spain and it is rumored that she banged a couple of my high school classmates.

canovack - I also hold out hope that our American fighters will refuse to support tyranny if it ever comes to that; however, I have reservations about how much back bone the careerist flag officers in today's armed forces will behave. Perhaps the LtCols, or maybe the Cols, will let their moral compasses guide them when orders are illegal, but they all of mouths to feed...

If you're not already members, check out Oath Keepers (www.OathKeepers.org ). Honestly I'd be surprised if you guys aren't members, but check it out if not. It's for those who took their oath seriously.

PVB, it's interesting that you identify the flag officers as being somewhat different from the senior field grade officers. When I published my manifesto "A Declaration of American Beliefs and Principles", I pointed out that flag officers, by and large, might be politicians first and soldiers second. It is for that reason that I advised any commander-in-chief to give equal or greater credence to the opinions of the field grade officers as compared to those at the highest echelons of star rank. Now, speaking as an Army officer, I put a great deal of confidence in guys like Martin Dempsey and Ray Odierno, however, not all four bangers are cut from that same bolt of cloth.

PVB, it is interesting that you have drawn a distinction between flag officers and senior field grade officers. While the general officers with whom I was associated were all very well educated, experienced, and capable flag officers, there is an element of politics that likely enters the equation when serving at the top echelons of our military establishment. I believe that guys like Martin Dempsey and Ray Odierno would adhere to their principles, however I have known some (few) generals who were capable commanders, who were also pricks and ass-holes as well. That said, when I published my manifesto "A Declaration of American Beliefs and Principles", I included the idea that any commander-in-chief should give equal credence to the opinions of senior field grade officers along with those of the four bangers.

Most of the Generals/Admirals are just searching for that high paying civilian job as their "golden parachute". It is a shame but I feel it to be true.

In Somalia, we went from house to house collecting guns from the people, allowing them to keep no more than one for self defense. One day, after it was all over, I wondered aloud what would have happened were we ordered to do the same in LA after the Rodney King riots. Nobody would openly say that would have been unconstitutional, though the one who was most adamant about following the hypothetical order is a general today. Yes, the flag officer of old who would throw his stars out the window is long gone I fear...

My Father was an enlisted man (E-7). I never heard him say a bad thing about the field grade officers above him. BUT, I could tell from out conversations, that he didn't feel the same way about the generals.

P V B - What you had to do in Somalia has already been done here - only without any provision to keep ANY gun in the house for protection. It was done by fed agents in New Orleans after Katrina, and included kicking in doors and physical assaults against the citizens who were unwilling to surrender their arms. Apparently the 'first rule' of emergency response is to control and dominate the area.... Where did I hear THAT before?

Was that gun-grab unconstitutional? You bet! Un-prosecuted to this day? You bet! Did it happen? The videos are all over YouTube and LiveLeak. I watched one where the goons not only broke into the house after being denied entry, but knocked an old lady to the floor to get her shotgun which she wasn't even holding at the time. AND they had point-men with carbines pointed at her when the big guy knocked her down. My country 'tis of thee... but THAT ain't my country - or at least not the one I learned about in my history and government classes.

Times are a-changin' -- and not for the better. Honestly don't know what we can do at this late hour. Individual resistance seems so...futile.

I'd guess that how one would respond to a home invasion by government storm troopers would likely depend on a number of variables such as age, strength of beliefs in liberty, willingness to die, etc, etc. As many have heard me posit in the past, one of my reasons for keeping a lot of firearms, in a variety of locations and caches, is so that if I am victimized by such an invasion, there will always be a residue of firearms still available to me when the government "helpers" have departed my AO.

Anyone in here need a couple of AK-74 mags? I was partaking of the grape one night and had a dislexia attack. Was trying to order AK-47s but ended up with 2 for the 74. I will mail them to anyone that has a use for them.

Ha! Gotta be careful around those grapes, Cecil. They're damned near as tricky and sneaky as barley.

Hey, Cecil, it seems to me, as I review the schedule of gun shows, that you have one or two shows per month in San Antonio. Why not just take those AK mags to a show and trade them for the correct ones? I do that sort of thing quite a bit. Most exhibitors will trade item for item without a fee for the exchange.

Thanks Colonel. I hadn't thought about that.

Hope ALL the guys and their families in here have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. You guys are interesting and have a keen insight into what s going on.

Cecil's grapes also make surfing the Gallery of Guns a very dangerous proposition....
