(GunReports.com) -- An e-mail exchange among Justice Department officials in 2010 shows some in the Department worried about bad press if reporters knew the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives let guns "walk" into the hands of drug cartels.
The e-mail exchange occurred in October 2010, almost four months before the gunwalking scandal broke publicly.
It's included among more than 500 pages of documents recently released by the Justice Department in response to a Congressional subpoena. The exchange is especially revealing because it demonstrates a level of awareness among some at Justice, which oversees ATF, that the practice of "gunwalking" could be viewed as embarrassing.
"It's a good case," wrote Laura Sweeney, a Justice public affairs specialist about a gunwalking case known internally as Operation Wide Receiver started in 2006. "But the only obstacle will be explaining why we let them continue to send guns to Mexico while we were investigating."

EMBARRASSING? Ya THINK??? The real disappointment about this whole thing is the lack of the Main Stream Media talking and writing about this. Doesn't say much about our main source of information concerning our government. An informed public would certainly help in our efforts to have elections that really mean something. Sad indeed . . . . Sigh. Gee, it also provides names of people which are threads in the investigation. Subpoenas for their e-mails on the subject might turn up something that has NOT been specified in prior requests for documentation. You know, if the kids pick at every loose thread on the back of your driver's seat, pretty soon the whole thing comes apart. I think the same principle applies in government. Just keep picking those loose threads! Wow.....DOJ feared bad press!!! Is that all that's bothering them? C'mon guys; ATF goes out and violates the very laws that they are sworn to enforce.....and they are worried about bad press?! This s--t is getting to smell worse and worse as we go..... Laws? We don' need no steenkin' laws. We got badges, instead...an guns. BEEG guns. To paraphrase Ivana Trump: "Laws are for little people!" ...and Conservatives??? Memo to ATF and (In)Justice Dept.: You have directly or indirectly caused the deaths of American law enforcement officers and Mexican citizens. But your only concern is about the "bad press" this will generate? Have you no shame? None whatsoever? @Visigoth52: Nope! Instead, thy have 'The Audacity Of Dope(s)' as taught by their Chicago-based leader(s). I really like David B's analogy regarding the press. The info regarding Congress' actions on F&F will come apart sooner than later as the likes of ISSA keep picking away. Our thanks go to Chuck Grassley and Darrel Issa. I think that if they both continue with this investigation, we may yet see some positive results. The mounting pressure from increasing numbers of Congressional types calling for Holder's resignation may get to be too much for even BHO to ignore.
