(GunReports.com) - Ten Arizona sheriffs slammed the Obama administration on Friday over a botched federal operation that lost track of up to 1,400 high-powered rifles sold to suspected straw purchasers for Mexican drug gangs.
The sheriffs called for the president to launch an independent investigation and for Attorney General Eric Holder to step down or be fired. They also said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' 2009 operation, known as "Fast and Furious," was a betrayal of state law enforcement.
In what ATF said was an effort to target drug cartel leaders, the agency allowed straw purchasers for drug cartels to buy thousands of weapons from Arizona gun shops. Officials say agents lost track of about 1,400 of more than 2,000 guns identified in the operation.
A number of guns have been recovered at crime scenes in Mexico, and two of the guns were found at the scene where Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot to death in Southern Arizona on Dec. 14. It's still unclear whether the fatal bullet came from one of those weapons or another gun.
Standing in front of a Phoenix memorial for fallen law enforcement officers, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, whose jurisdiction is on the Arizona-Mexico border, called for the truth to come out about the entire operation.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said, "Where's the honor of our country and us in law enforcement when a brother officer is murdered in our state here in Arizona, protecting our country, and then we find out months later that two of these weapons were weapons from Fast and Furious?"

The more the feds piss off local law enforcement, the better for us. Up to this time, the feds have petty much just rolled into any county they wanted to and demanded support with a claim of superior jurisdiction. If this keeps going, they may start to find themselves facing sheriff's deputies and armed citizen posses turning them back. Wouldn't that be a happy day! Washington having to check with locals before they could act! Roger that, david. That is the way it is supposed to be. The County Sheriff is the highest law enforcement officer in that jurisdiction and the feds are supposed to clear "everything" through the Sheriff first. Here again, the over all strategy must be to continue to keep this F&F mess in the news. As I have posted in the past, education can be our best friend..... So, education of the population concerning the underhanded tactics of this administration can and should produce some interesting results. Keep up the pressure, sheriffs! How can we forget that the we have a left wing, totalitarian, socialist President who earnestly believes that law abiding American citizens cannot be trusted with firearms, only Mexican drug cartel ruthless killers can be trusted with firearms.I vote we run O'Bama for President of Mexico. He would have to reside in Mexico and he could take BATFE with him and leave the U.S. alone! Image a BATFE agent telling a Zeta gunman to turn in his weapon. Who do you think would win that one? The LAST thing we want is for Obama to appoint the special counsel as the sheriffs suggest. Frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't already asked for that to "clear" his name. I suspect BO still thinks Holder can 'hold' the line. I could be in error here, but I don't think a special prosecutor has to be appointed by the president. I believe that Darrell Issa, as chairman of the oversight committee, can appoint one. Do we really think Obama cares about protocol?
