Bolton @ NRA Annual Meeting: Obama Wants Gun Control in 2nd Term
May 2, 2011Printer Friendly | Email |
(GunReports.com) Former ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton spoke at the NRA Annual Meeting on Friday, saying Barack Obama is laying the foundation to push an ambitious gun control agenda if he wins a second term.
We can understand that, as he likes to say, hes playing the long game, and that leading from behind means waiting until hes elected to a second term when he faces no further political constraints and his true agenda can come to the floor, Bolton told thousands of gun owners at the National Rifle Associations annual meeting in Pittsburgh. And I believe right at the top of it is [to] increase gun control at the federal level and at the international level.
Bolton spoke 11 minutes, devoting much of the speech on the collapse of Mexico. He cited estimates of 35,000 to 40,000 drug-related homicides in the last five years in Mexico, spoke of how dangerous tourist areas have become and noted recent State Department travel warnings.
If it werent for our demand, the supply wouldnt be there and the drug cartels wouldnt be there. But the administration in as cynical a political move as I think weve seen in Washington in a long time and thats saying somethingis using this crisis in Mexico and the use of drugs in our own country not to combat the illicit narcotics but to use it as a foundation to argue for stricter gun controls at the federal level in our country, he said.
Bolton argued that while some guns used by the gangs in Mexico do come from the United States, the bulk of those guns originated from corrupt police and military officials or were procured in the international weapons market.

Very good speech. There are a lot of great speakers at this event including Mike Huckabee, Lt Col North, Newt, and others. Go to NRA Videos on You Tube to watch more.
Didn't the firearms manufactures jack their prices up enough after his first election. Why don't I believe a word he says.

WHAT 2nd term ????
I think he'll make a second R.Clay, unless the republicans can come up with a serious candidate. Please don't run out and buy more overpriced firearms in the meantime on Boltons' comments. Unless it's one you just gotta have.

More groundless twaddle and fear-mongering designed to inflame gun owners to vote Republican and pay ever-higher prices for their guns and ammunition. President Obama has more important issues to deal with than what a former UN ambassador guesses might be true. Listen to the real news, read the paper, use your own brain.
Playhookie, you don't believe Bolton because every time he opens his mouth it a lie to support whomever is paying him. That's why. If he's right about Obama, it's accidental.
Now, guys, as to the 'supply / demand' thing. They go together, but demand is NOT always the leader. E.g. what is the demand today for a cold-fusion powered pick-up truck? Zero, right? But now that I mentioned it, and you're thinking about it, I bet it's at least 12. Invent one and it'll be about a be-zillion. Supply first.
If there were no suppliers, demand would switch to some alternative product - alcohol maybe, REALLY strong coffee products for cokeheads, I dunno, but it would change or dissapear. No supply, demand moves to alternative products. No alternatives, demand ceases. SO -if we're concerned about all the damned drug business, then we need to make the War on Drugs a real war, not an excuse for locking up drug users to make profits for prison operation companies. Compromise all the suppliers, and the problem will go away, period.
wether you like him or not, Obama is smart enough to know that any anti gun legislation will cost the democrats greatly. Only the far left fringe and the sky is falling right bring it up any more.
Prices went up because simply, the price of metals went up. Huckabee is an ass and a pawn
I am certainly not going to try any second guessing as to what Obama is, or is not, likely to do from one day to the next.....let alone in a second term. What I AM certain of is his abysmal record of anti-Second Amendment positions and votes throughout his political life. With that in memory, I wouldn't put anything past this guy.
Whether this "news" that Obama is anti-2nd Amendment comes from Bolton or Barbara Boxer, the fact is that the basis for this old news is Obama, himself. All of the ad hominem attacks above don't negate the logic of the position. Obama is virulently anti-gun (and personal freedom); if this issue is kept quiescent in the 2012 election fewer voters may be mad enough at him to vote against him; if reelected, who cares what the voters think, he can't run again. The logical conclusion is that he is going to press his politically unpopular agenda items if he is reelected. I do agree that the Republicans need to put up someone who is electable, conservative, and a supporter of the Constitution in words AND deeds.
No matter what he said years ago since he's been in office he hasn't done anything anti gun and stated his support for the second amendment. That doesn't mean I care to vote for him. I don't want to see demand skyrocket and prices along with it through scare tactics. They all say whatever we want to hear to get elected. Then we pay the price.
playhookie - Frankly, I do not believe this is scare tactics. Bolton is making an assessment on his experience, and I think he's correct. As some have pointed out above, who will the R's come up with? Anyone with any level of credibility? Canovack is right on with regards to Obama's record, which needs to be viewed collectively, not just over the last two years. As Visigoth says, he will force whatever he wants down our throats. Look at what he did with health care. Once he is re-elected, his political career is essentially over, and he will do whatever he wants. By then, he will have had four years to make appointments, and we've seen how pro-liberty they have been so far. The potential cost to this country is very dangerous, and to all of our liberties, not just the 2nd Amendment.
Don't buy the Brady rhetoric about Obama not being anti-gun enough. That is their scare tactic to keep contributions flowing. You have a wolf in sheep's clothing sitting in the White House right now.
So what do we do? Stay abreast of current issues - not just the "fringe" of 2nd Amendment either, but all of them. Learn as much as we can about the track records of possible candidates well before election - not an easy task with info-tainment media manipulation. Share our information with others as appropriate to help keep people voting rationally.
I, for one, am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. McCain was a non-choice. I'm glad Trump is asking those bombastic questions. Now the other candidates will have to ask and answer them as well. I was afraid we would have another list of namby-pamby, do-nothing choices again. I do wish I knew how Trump stood on the 2nd Amendment, Immigration, and other topics that he sure is quiet about. Alan West is another great one, but say's he's not running.
These parties are both corrupt, I'll vote for Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura if they make a go at it.
hey folks- call your representatives and ask them to support H.R. 822: National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 at the following link http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h112-822
This would address reciprocity of concealed carry permit holders across state lines. Last year the Thune Amendment only lost by one vote. So here is the chance to make reciprocity win ... same as a drivers license is good across state lines... a few exceptions may exist such as carry into NYC or some other areas where the gun phobics are still entrenched.. but call your representatives and senators to get this passed once and for all... pass it now and make stiffer federal rules less likely... if the power is already ordered by congress the atf can't over rule....
In response to Mister E, a listing of potential Republican candidates maintained by Frontsight, tells us that The Donald says he is generally in favor of the Second Amendment and thinks that any law abiding citizen who wants a gun should be able to own it. He does, however, think that the so-called "assault weapons" are instruments that would be useful only to criminals, and he favors a 72-hour waiting period for purchase of firearms.
In view of the above, Mr. Trump might be a mixed bag when it comes to our firearms freedoms. As for his other qualifications, it will be necessary for him to declare who he really is, in the course of political debate, if he is a serious candidate for the Oval Office.
Trump made a complete fool out himself. He's done
And let's see... Obama, Clinton, McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty, etc., Haven't made fools of themselves? How come they're not done? If they're from inside the beltway, they should be voted out.
Trump was completely trumped and chumped by Obama. What a fool with the birther crap
Well, should worse come to worst, any new restrictive firearms legislation that evolves from this administration can probably be undone down the road. We've seen it before, when the Clinton crap was allowed to sunset during the next administration. I don't see BHO forcing through much in the way of gun control with the GOP controlling part - or all - of Congress. But even if he does there'll be another Republican administration someday and the damage hopefully can be reversed.
To hope for the undoing of bad legislation is essentially.....blowing in the wind. Come on, guys, the only reason that the Clinton crap was allowed to sunset was because that's the way the law was written in the first place. I, and many others, fought tooth and nail against the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA68), but it was passed and signed into law anyway. GCA68 is a prime example of bad legislation. In fact, it was authored by Senator Tom Dodd, who got his ideas from the Nuremberg Laws of NAZI Germany. Old Tom was a fledgling attorney in the prosecution of the NAZI criminals during those trials. When Tom came home to the USA, he kept Hitler's files and when the time was right, he sprang the whole mess on us at a time of national hysteria over the assassinations of JFK and RFK. AND.....GCA68 has never had a sunset clause. It is still with us to this day, to include the infamous BATFE Form 4473, the prohibitions of interstate sales of firearms, etc, etc. So, my friends, there is little consolation to be gained from the notion that bad legislation may disappear somewhere down the road. In my experience, once it is here.....it is here for the foreseeable future.....like forever.
Charles - Obama forced health care down our throats, and he'll do the same with any other agenda he wishes. If he cannot muster congressional support, he'll do end runs via his appointees. He is a snake in the grass...
Charles, with all due respect, insurance companies are ripping us off big time. If you have no health ins. and you or your children get sick. Who pays the bill? Believe it or not, some nations have better med. coverage than we at a fraction of the cost. Also, again, Obama has done nothing on the 2nd amendment.
Hookie - "Better" is a relative term. In the U.S., most of the health care issue was managed by states before Obama got involved. Income taxes in nations with socialized medicine have exceeded ours for decades. Insurance companies operate on very slim margins, which are regulated. If you want to fix health care costs, you have to tackle tort reform, and our legislatures full of trial lawyers will never let that happen.
Also, Obama HAS taken steps against the 2nd Amendment - Holder, Sotomayor, Kagan, the United Nations, etc. Get your head out of the sand!!!
PVB, health care is paid for one way or another. Insurance companies are for profit. You pay for it through your employer, on your own, or in some countries, through your taxes. Ours is not the most cost effective system by far. You're correct though, it probably will never change. I've yet to see the great attack on 2nd amendment by Obama that was predicted by the sky is falling again clowns. Tell me, which of your guns or carry rights have they made illegal?
Hookie - it's only been two years. Two years filled with appointments of people who are anti-liberty in general and against the private ownership of arms specifically. Look at the BATFE Obamanation with Gunrunner. Look at some of the BATFE "administrative" decisions being considered. Do you really believe they aren't trying to set the table for more anti-gun legislation??
Obama has a long standing, anti-gun record that precedes the last two years. He is no friend to our Constitution, no matter how many times he says he is.
The sky isn't falling because people like us are aware of the dangers, and vote accordingly. If we get sucked into believing the rhetoric and bogus statistics from Obama and his associates, there is no doubt they will slip the worst legislation we can imagine right under our noses.
PVB, You seem to be well informed. I'm aware of his previous record and am not happy with many of his actions. I hope there's a better alternative in the next presidential election. But it seems to me the politicians who claim to be the staunchest supporters of the 2nd amendment are often the same ones calling for an end to programs such as Social security and medicare. I am an indepedent who deplores making a choice between the continuation of needed social programs and my right to bear arms. I am not a single issue voter and don't even like carrying my cell phone around with me. I wish we lived in a world where carrying protection was unecessary. I'm hoping for a ticket with Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura as it could be an opportunity for some real change, which we sorely need. It's been a pleasure reading your input and the best of luck to you my friend.
We presently find ourselves in "interesting times"..... Those terms "interesting times" are extracted from an old Chinese saying..... "May you live in interesting times", which actually was meant to essentially convey the meaning....."I hope your world turns to s--t". I am concerned that those interesting times are going to keep on getting more interesting. Unless we can find and nominate a strong candidate to oppose BHO in 2012, I fear that times are going to get really, really "interesting". If I thought that John Bolton had a snowball's chance in hell to successfully run, I'd rally to the cause, but right now the pickings are looking pretty slim for anyone to unseat Obama. Strange as is may be, with Obama's approval ratings inhabiting the lower portions of the septic tank, he has a pretty damned good chance of keeping the Oval Office for another four years.
Hookie - You are correct. We are totally disenfranchised.
Canovack - I fear you are correct. Obama is bad for the USA, everybody knows it, but there don't appear to be many options. I saw a pair of bumper stickers the other day:
"I miss W" and "...even Jimmy Carter."
