Hunting and Gun Rights Opponent Formally Confirmed

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The sportsmen’s community came within five votes of stopping the nomination of Cass Sunstein to serve as the head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), otherwise known as the “Regulatory Czar, ” according to the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance.

Sunstein is an avowed anti hunter and does not believe the second amendment applies to individual gun ownership, said said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance president and CEO.

While a confirmation vote took place yesterday, it was a formality after the Senate voted to over-ride a hold placed on the nomination by Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson. It would have taken 40 votes to prevent the confirmation. Opponents of Sunstein were only able to earn 35.

For the confirmation vote yesterday, which was in essence a formality, there would have had to be 50 "no" votes. Thus, the real vote regarding Sunstein took place Wednesday night.

Republican Senator John Cornyn played an especially important role in the effort to block Sunstein as he placed a “hold” on the nomination earlier in the summer.

I can't see this guy actually getting away with banning hunting or firearms. If he tried that, he'd have to spend the rest of his days in office living in a heavily-guarded compound and driving to work in an armored car.

Most likely, we'll see a gradual strangling of gun rights through the regulatory process Sunstein will oversee. Sunstein is the author of a book called 'Nudge,' which advocates changing behavior in a populace by gradually changing the choice incentives that government can impose. So a small 'fee' on ammo--to pay for some oppressed group's needs--will shave 2 or 3 points off gun ownership totals by incrementally increasing costs. Then a new regulation that imposes a slightly higher bar on firearms possession or gun record-keeping FFL rules shaves another half point, and so on. Gradually warming water eventually cooks the frog. Guess who's the frog?

Well, the Democrats started that "nudging" process around 1968, and progressively added fees, recordkeeping requirements, and other rules until the 1986 push-back under Ronald Reagan. Then, Florida started the trend in shall-issue concealed carry, and other states followed with reciprocity. So, we have more freedom now than we've had in the last century.

However, as Woody points out, the "Nudge" is proceeding, as the BATFE slowly continues to strangle the gun retail industry by simply revoking as many licenses as possible for the most trivial of excuses, and engaging in thousands of corrupt prosecutions.

We'll just keep fighting one trench at a time until we win.

I agree as well. Pay attention at your local gun shows. A few months back here in Tennessee they snuck in a little tax stamp on their ammo. So we had to pay there too. The'll keep chipping away and we'll keep paying. It's little things here and there, most folks don't see it and pay no mind until they look back one day......But as I see it. Most stones only have so many loose flakes till you hit solid rock. Need I say more?

I am proud that it was my State's senator that was in the lead on opposing the nomination of this wack-job. There is a lot of work that gun owners in other States (like Nevada, California, Mass. N.J., Delaware, Vermont, etc.) can do to get other good men like Cornyn in the Senate.

One of the dem. senators from my state is on his way out, his short time as senator is a simple record as a yes man for the dems. He won't even show up for a simple town hall meeting, even his dem constituants are mad at him, it will be a good riddence. I would like to see this guy go out and personally defend the deer and elk fawns and calves against bears, lions, and coyotes. He doesn't need a weapon, he's a lawyer.

you guys are missing the point. it is not about the hunting or gun owning. it is about the amount of money the elected civil servants can collect from the government.(the people) everything in this world is about the money. you want to know where the support is coming from trace the money trail back and you will find the source. there is so much money that passes hands out in the D.C. beltway that nobody ever knows about that we could probably pay for the healthcare of the entire world if it be known. these elected officials are corrupt and need to be dealt with accordingly. why do people keep electing these lunatics plain and simple. you throw a dog a bone and they are happy, which is exactly what these elected officials do. we are all pavlovs dog. we salivate on command and do whatever it takes to get our bone. we need to break this kind of attitude in this country or this country will cease to exist as most of us who grew up here have come to know.

In CO the governor and one of the senators who the governor appointed, and voted to confirm, will be voted out this next election. People from both parties are pretty heated up about this.
