Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), is calling for the resignation, not reassignment, of BATF acting director Kenneth E. Melson.

Cornyn: Holder Should Ask for Resignations, Not Reassignments for Gun-Walking Operations

(GunReports.com) — U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former state Attorney General, today responded to reports that Kenneth E. Melson, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been reassigned to a new position within the Justice Department.

On Aug. 30, BATF Acting Director Melson announced that he is leaving the agency to become Senior Advisor to the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy (OLP), where he will specialize in forensic science policy issues at the Department of Justice.

“Instead of reassigning those responsible for ‘Fast and Furious’ within the Department of Justice, Attorney General Holder should ask for their resignations and come clean on all alleged gun-walking operations, including a detailed response to allegations of a Texas-based scheme,” Cornyn said.

Earlier this month, Sen. Cornyn sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder demanding answers following recent press reports of alleged Texas-based “gun-walking” programs similar to the “Fast and Furious” operation currently being investigated by Congressional lawmakers. To date, Attorney General Holder has refused to respond.

The gunwalking scandal centered on an ATF program that allowed thousands of high-caliber weapons to knowingly be sold to so-called "straw buyers" who are suspected as middlemen for criminals. Those weapons, according to the Department of Justice, have been tied to at least 12 violent crimes in the United States, and an unknown number of violent crimes in Mexico.

Dubbed operation "Fast and Furious," the plan was designed to gather intelligence on gun sales, but ATF agents have told members of Congress that they were routinely ordered to back off and allow weapons to "walk" when sold.

How about Jail time? Someone - probably many people died as a result of their decisions! But why would you expect the Mob bosses (DOJ) to punish the goons (BATF) doing their dirty work - you'd expect them to move them to new positions, notice they didn't say DEmoted - Probably PROmoted

Thank you Senator Cornyn. Keep up the good work on this miss use of justis and correption.

Unfortunately, the letter from Cornyn, my Senator, is just more bloviating and posturing. The members of the Obama administration do what they want, when they want, how they want and to whomever they want without fear or reprisal. DOJ will ignore this request from Cornyn jast as they have from others and NOTHING will be done about it. I just pray that Obama and all of his thugs get what is coming to them in the afterlife, or before if at all possible. They are ALL criminals and Marxists.

Keep up the pressure. Squeeze until Holder pops.

I wish I had a cushy job, like the guilty were "reassigned" to.

When Richard Nixon's scandalous Watergate case came to light, it didn't take very long for Congress to appoint a special prosecutor to pursue an investigation. Ultimately, of course, this led to Nixon's resignation. Now, if all of that happened in response to a scandal in which nobody was killed, why is it taking so damned long to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate this mess in which at least two, possibly many more have been killed? This administration sure gets away with a lot of s--t.

I would be willing to bet good money that Melson also got a big fat raise along with his cushy new position. The government takes care of it own.

these people should not only be fired, they should be charged and prosecuted if they committed any crimes. this holds true for every one involved not just the fodder at the bottom. go up the line till everyone involved is found and made to pay. it's our tax dollars they wasted. i can think of better uses for my money, can you?

aj - I agree 100%. You've been quiet for a while...

caonvack - We've been saying that since this all began.

Elsewhere - sorry, I can't find a link - I read that none of the reassignments were promotions FWIW. Yes, they should be terminated and arrested.

Did anybody notice Obama created a website for White House petitions? He references that he promised more transparent government that is accountable to the people - HA!

We should all REALLY be after Holder. He is dangerous. And speaking of dangerous, has anyone noticed that now the govt. also wants to have Congressional control over the free TV airwaves. So, let's see, control our weapons AND control the airwaves, quit smoking, DWI brings a felony for 1st time offenders. What are they going to pick on next. I know. Sex.

DWI a felony? Where'd you hear that one?

Well, its started already. A family that runs a small gun shop in Deming, N.M was arested yesterday by the BATFE for possable gun running and or porviding weapons and ammo to strew buyers for possable resale in Mexico. The El Paso Times www.elpasotimes.com has some info on this matter.

On the other side, local hunters were confrunted by Mexican agents that crossed into the U.S. without permission, and had a confruntation with the hunters, hunting dove. http://www.ktsm.com/news/mexican-federal-agents-cross-into-us-without-permission

I have posted before here and have told you all I live about 12 miles from the border, so theres The News From The Southern Frunt. If you don't think its not coming your way, your wrong.

They slipped that one in on us during the last legislative session. In Texas, you can now be charged with a felony, first time out of the chute. And if you have a wreck and a victim has brain damage, you can get 20 years. Now I am not defending Drunk Drivers, I think in my own twisted mind that it is just a little over-reaction.

Cecil - 1st time? I agree it's excessive. Most of us, truth be told, right or wrong, have probably operated a vehicle when we were impaired on some level. Like you, I'm not advocating it. If you wreck your car and cause death or grievous bodily harm, then I believe you should be held very accountable - drunk or not; texting or not; teenage or not; etc.

Lone-ranger - definitely not good news about the Mexican "agents." I guess the only way we know they weren't druggies in drag is the hunters lived to tell about it! I'm a little confused by the article though - the references about going across the bridge - dove hunters go back and forth, or is other traffic restrained because the hunters were confronted by Mexican "invaders"?

Has anyone been following what DOJ has don to Gibson Guitars? Shut them down for importing partially processed wood. That could apply to gunstocks as well.

The finest government money can buy. But I am REALLY concerned about the latest brain fart re: Congress in control of the free TV waves. This is something to which we should pay attention.

PVB, there is a brige that go's over the Rail Road and a hiway (the border hiway), then stops before it crosse the Rio Grand into Mexico, at a border crossing point. A gate is on the east side of the Port Of Entry and is there for axcess to travel along the north side of the Rio Garnd. It is full of weeds and grass were the dove nest and feed during the summer. Its near water (the Rio), and feed (the weeds and grass), and Mexico. It serves as a buffer between the Rio Grand, and the Border Hiway and the homes of El Paso residents that are north of the hiway. It's about 1/2 mile wide and 10 miles or so long. In some areas of the buffer area cotten and onions are grown.

Colonel, I have a flying question for you. I once flew out to an oil rig on a Bell Ranger, I think that is sort of like a Huey. When you flew the Huey, and you were PIC, did you sit on the starboard side and if you did, why do the PIC fly from that position and not port side as pilots do on fixed wing?

The Bell Ranger looks like a cut down UH-1, because Bell Aircraft built both of them. It's funny, in Vietnam, the OH-6, a Hughes product was the forerunner of the Ranger (OH-57). It's sorta funny that one can generally tell who builds helicopters from just looking at them. All of the Bell birds have similar appearances, as do the Sikorsky birds. Boeing's contribution to the mix, is the CH-47 Chinook, and you can tell it's a Boeing bird, because it looks like a bomber (in fact in Vietnam we often used it as a bomber).

I'm no longer certain of the protocols dealing with the seating of pilots in aircraft. Your observation concerning fixed wing aircraft is accurate.....the AC still sits on the port side. Most of the helicopter flying I experienced in Vietnam was with the AC in the port seat, but in the little OH-6, we sorta flew them both ways.....AC in port or starboard seats.

Now, here's where the water really gets muddy..... When we flew the AH-1 Cobras, the AC always had the rear seat, and the same appears to be true with the AH-10 Apache. But if you look at Air Force fighters, the AC has the front seat, while the REO/navigator has the rear seat.

In reality, I think it's all sort of traditional, because both seats provide the same controls to both occupants, although I'm not really certain about the Air Force fighters.

Thanks Colonel. I was just confused, of course that is nothing new for me.

Supposed to get cool nights next week. I am afraid my lawn is going to spontaneously combust if we don't get some rain soon. God is punishing us for something, perhaps for electing Obama. LOL. Have a great long week-end.

Respectfully,

Cecil

Sorry Cecil, I cant lit that pass. I know God doe's not punish people for the wrongs of others. I also know you said that in jest. And I frogive you. But the God fearing man I am, I cant lit that pass. God got me off a few mountines in Afgan without holes in my body and my blood still intact. Please don't blame us or God for BO's CF mistakes.

Wasn't meant to offend Lone Ranger. Glad you made it out of Afghanistan and we all thank you for your service to this country of ours. Sorry you took offense.

Hey Cecil, it looks like it may cool down a few degrees. It doesn't look like we'll be getting any rain any time soon, though. The most recent thing I saw in the paper was that we might get some in November! This is starting to get worrisome.

Lone Ranger - thanks!

I take it you Texans get no rain from that system over the Gulf...

I think it rained or is raining around Houston but that is about 200 miles due East of San Antonio and The Colonel is up at Ft. Hood, NE of me, so only the eastern part of the state got any. We are in dire straights here.

This reminds me of the drought back in the 50's.

While I was a young college student in the 50s and had little knowledge of the plight of Texas, I do recall a song that was sung by the Kingston Trio. It opened with "They're rioting in Africa....They're starving in Spain....There are hurricanes in Florida.....and Texas needs rain....." It went on from there, but the idea that the drought in Texas was in a song of national popularity, indicates that it was a hell of a drought.....like it is now.

I recently sent the lyrics of that song to a friend of mine as the same problems that exist today, existed 50 years ago when that song came out. I used to have the album "Live From The Hungry I".

You could buy Hill Country land for $25 an acre but no one wanted it.

How well I remember that album, "Live From The Hungry i". As a matter of fact, I have it in my collection of CDs, and I can recount many interesting memories from the days when I used to listen to it on vinyl LP records. I must have had every album that the Kingston Trio made. I also had stuff by the Brothers Four, The New Christie Minstrels, etc, etc.....

Yes Sir, I remember them all. We ARE getting old.

Yeah; ain't it great? The older we get, less of this crap we have to put up with.....

The crap is overtopping my shoes. I am listening to Obama give one of his "Chitlin Speeches" today. Funny how he can put drag out that dialect when it is convenient. Someone save us all.

Have a Great Labor Day, Colonel, and the same to the rest of the regulars in here.

Canovack - I think that it's slightly more accurate to say that the older we get, the less we care about small stuff and the less crap we're WILLING to put up with. Just, you based, on observations from my own life....

Holder should either DEMAND resignations, or resign himself. In fact, it may come to him demanding them in order to protect his own hiney. I don't see how he could have not known about this dirty business.

It was part of Obama's "Under The Radar" crap. A way of contolling guns in America.

I still maintain that the Congress should appoint a special prosecutor to investigate this mess. One person whose entire job is to get to the bottom and/or top of this thing would likely go a long way toward encouraging some resignations. There is a "smoking gun" somewhere in Washington, and once it is found, the dominoes would start falling.

I agree Colonel. If we can spend 40 million on a special procecutor investigating Bill Clinton's humm job, we should certainly take this seriously.

Apparently, the GOP has no balls, or there would be a special prosecutor already.

The GOP has balls enough on things that will push their reactionary social agenda - like opposing medical / insurance reform and cutting social programs and taxes on the rich. But they probably don't really want to hurt the ATF either - because if they succeed in all the things they say they want to do, they're going to need the ATF to try to stop very angry citizens from using their weapons.

And before you guys all get mad with me - how else would you explain that they were willing to shut down the entire government, but won't boil Holder's hiney until he rats out his boss? They claim to hate BO, and what better way to get him than a cover-up over running guns?

Not enough Americans even know it happened. People do not read the papers and take pride in announcing that they don't watch the news. Sort of explains how we got into the mess we in which we now find ourselves.

Good point, Cecil. It never ceases to amaze and disappoint me just how little attention most people devote to keeping up on the news of the world, nation, and even local venues. It staggers the imagination that the majority of our younger generations know virtually nothing of geography, history, and the forces at work that are shaping their lives. They are the voters who put this administration into the White House, and yet they have no clue as to why things are going the way they are.

Unfortunately Colonel, they will learn of their mistake later on. We will all be dead but they will have to deal with "The Change".

In here Bubba, we only buy guns and ammo. Wrong target audience.

Cecil, I don't know whether these hackers are even aware that they are posting on our forum. I have a feeling that some people out there in cyberspace are posting crap that might be overflowing into the bands on which GunReports is published. One would think, however, that our own webmaster would have taken some steps to curtail these unrelated posts.

Or at the very least to delete them from the pages.
