Understanding the Not-So-Simple Drill Bit

They may be familiar to some, but not every gunsmith knows the ins and outs of drill bits. Here are the basics.

Repairing the L.C. Smith Hammerless Double

The graceful, light, and distinctive L.C. Smith Hammerless Double sidelock is a favorite of American shotgunners. Here’s how to fix its most common problems. If you own a Smith and want to make it suitable to shoot again, or if you are presented a Smith to repair, here’s what you need to know about the shotgun.

SHOT Show Video: Two Big-Hole Wheelguns from Kahr Arms

In June 2010, Kahr Arms purchased Minnesota-based firearms manufacturer, Magnum Research, Inc., maker of the Desert Eagle Pistol and BFR Revolvers in .44 Magnum, .45 LC/.410 or .45/70. Kahr Arms offers a selection of other niche-type firearms, such as the “Tommy Gun” and Auto-Ordnance line of M1 .30 caliber carbines. In this video, Gun Tests Contributing Editor Roger Eckstine shows off two of the company’s big-hole BFR wheelguns.

SHOT Show Video: Easy Disassembly for the Modular Beretta Nano

Beretta USA introduced the BU-9 Nano as its entry into the pocket 9mm pistol category last September. Initial shipments of the American-made pistol left the Accokeek, Maryland factory beginning in November 2011, with a suggested retail price of $475. In this video, Gun Tests’ Contributing Editor Roger Eckstine gets a detailed explanation of how easy the Nano is to break down for maintenance. The Nano's modularity provides for simple disassembly and easy cleaning. Safely disassemble the pistol by first engaging the striker deactivator, a patent pending safety mechanism that eliminates the need to pull the trigger prior to disassembly.

California Cop's Facebook Remarks Threaten Open-Carryers

March 15, 2010

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com)--An item on the MercuryNews.com (Calif.) website says that an East Palo Alto police detective is taking heat in online forums for allegedly posting comments from his Facebook account that advocate shooting Open Carry gun advocates.

The story said, "Detective Rod Tuason apparently made the remarks in response to a friend's status update, which joked that gun advocates who carry unloaded weapons in plain view as a political statement should start doing so in places such as Oakland, Richmond and East Palo Alto 'and not limit themselves to hoity toity cities.'

After several more comments in the thread, Tuason apparently joked that officers should shoot the advocates, who have made recent headlines throughout the Bay Area for sipping coffee at cafes and performing other everyday acts with visible weapons, the story said.

"Sounds like you had someone practicing their 2nd amendment rights last night!" Tuason wrote. "Should've pulled the AR out and prone them all out! And if one of them makes a furtive movement ... 2 weeks off!!!"

"We have to be careful because they're on his own personal private Web page," (Capt. Carl) Estelle said. "We have to be careful not to violate his First Amendment rights."

And if someone had "joked" about shooting one of his officers in the back, would Capt. Carl be so careful not to violate his First Amendment rights, or would Capt. Carl and a SWAT team visit the perp's home, hog-tie him and his family, shoot his dogs, and trash the place "in the interest of officer safety?"

"In no way are his personal comments reflective of any policies or procedures here at the department, nor does he speak for the police department," Estelle said.

But this officer also posted this: ""Haha, we had one guy last week try to do it! He got proned out and reminded where he was at and that turds will jack him for his gun in a heartbeat!" He was referring to a Redwood City man who strolled into the Mi Pueblo Food Center in East Palo Alto on Jan. 27 with a gun on his hip. So, I guess his personal comments ARE reflective of his department's policies and procedures. Imagine that.

"Those that know me know my form of humor after all i'm a former Marine!"

Apology NOT ACCEPTED. Marines know about fire discipline. Marines know about honor. This thug doesn't.

Gaviota

A pig is a pig, is a pig.

All LEO's have a set of written rules regarding personal conduct that they MUST follow, both on AND off duty.

You can be sure that "Detective Rod Tuason" broke one or more of those rules during his Facebook rants.

So... let's see how well the East Palo Alto PD enforces the law when it might penalize one of their own.

A thug with a badge is still just a thug. For guys like him it's a small step from shooting your mouth off to shooting an innocent and lawful gun carrier.

If this asswipe is still on the force without having been disciplined, then his comments do reflect the force's policies and attitudes. How else can you explain it?

I wonder what this guy's real problem is. If he was an LEO around here he'd be in deep doo-doo. Here in Arizona people open carry all the time. No one seems upset by it (except tourists).

Yep, Gav is right. If one of us said that, we might avoid the SWAT team bearing down on us, but if we "cap" someone in self defense, the comments would certainly be used against us to prove homicidal intent.

This guy reflects poorly on all LEO's, and the Captain's rationalization only serves to further undermine already waning public confidence in law enforcement.

The captain has a point that they need to be careful, though not just with respect to Detective Tuason - anybody "proned out" by East Palo Alto PD now has evidence to support any harassment or other claim against the department.

Marines & LEO's may show a sense of humor often misunderstood by the general public, but they also learn when to keep their traps shut. "Locker room" behavior made public is always bad PR. Many on this board served their country honorably, and I'm not surprised to see many take offense to this "detective."

This unloaded open carry horse crap is just that. Horse CRAP! Why anyone would want to open carry an unloaded firearm is beyond me. (Fortunately, I live in an open carry state and the firearm can be locked and loaded, and where the LE officers just love us!) That my friends IS dangerous! To YOU, those around you and to law enforcement like this turd Tuason that would even think of making remarks like that for everyone to see. He and his like LEO thinkers would have no problem jacking you and your family up just to make sure you are following the law. GO GET YOURSELF A CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT! Then you won't have to deal with jack-asses like Detective Tuason! And Tauson, I'm an ex-jarhead of 20 years..have you forgoten your oath? Has being a law enforcement officer clouded your thinking and sense of honor in that little pin brain of yours Marine? Brotherhood or not (once a Marine always a Marine)and true to the end for my brothers at arms... I would be ashamed to be seen with you ya jerk!

I spent a lot of years pushing a B&W around a beat that had its share of Adam-Henrys. And I saw a lot of young cops with a ten pound badge, a belt-fed primary weapon and a rocket in their pocket. I don't think it's real bright to carry a firearm in plain view (even less so if it's unloaded), but it is what it is. But the comments of Det. Tuason are beyond stupid. He may actually have to shoot somone some day for a LEGITIMATE reason, and the last thing he'll want to see is a copy of that comment floated his way by a hostile attorney. If he doesn't wind up playing butt-darts with Bubba, he'll be writing some very large checks. And as for being a Marine? The only fouled anchor in Tuason's life is between his ears.

First amendment rights , sure , but you have to respond to the statements made, as they do reflect on the dept. and other leo's and particularly the non action the comments received from management . Too many good officers that are professional in every action need backing from the upper management not silence. Just a civilians thoughts

It is really pathetic, not only is Det. Rod Tuason illiterate, "But as a person i did not mean no harm to anyone", but he does not want to be responsible for his actions. Apparently his department doesen't either. Bill

A real Marine will ALWAYS be responsible for their actions and political views. "NO EXCUSES" was born and bred in the Corps. How did this guy get to be a detective in the first place? Fact is stranger than fiction boys!

Here's another link that I hope you all will share...

This so called LEO has the old Badge went to his head syndom if you ask me. If somthing happens now what he said could come back a bite him in the a$$ big time including a nice big harassment law suit for the depart. I was in the Army and I wouldn't brag like that on somthing that doesn't just up like that kind of site, locker room jokes are somthing else. Also In Commiefornia most of the people that are carrying open right now are trying to get laws past to let us carry both open and concealed, that are hard if not impossable to get. We even have a Assembly woman out of Deigo trying to take all Out rights away from us right now. God Bless America and Our Troops Past, Present, and Future. Keeping to My Oath Locked Loaded and Keeping My Powder Dry
