(GunReports.com) -- The Scottsdale Gun Club is offering shooters and their families a chance to pose for photos with Santa while holding a variety firearms and other weapons.
Ron Kennedy, general manager of the Arizona gun club, said the business got the idea for the photo op last year when a club member happened to come in dressed as Santa and other members wanted their picture taken while they were holding their guns.
"Our customers have been looking for a fun and safe way to express their holiday spirit and passion for firearms," said Kennedy, noting people have used the photos for Christmas cards and Facebook posts. About 500 people showed up to the event Saturday to take a total of 150 photos when the first of two such events was launched.
Kennedy, whose club offers guns for sale and rental and has a 32-lane indoor shooting range, said the event wasn't aimed at children, but the club supports the right of parents to include their children in the photos and believes that's a personal choice.
The guns used in the photos aren't loaded and have had their firing pins removed, and their chambers are regularly cleared to ensure safety, Kennedy said.

A little passion for firearms is demonstrable in many ways. I fondly recall the Christmas Tree my detachment had in Vietnam. It was draped in bandoleers of 7.62 machine gun ammo with deactivated grenades hanging as decorations. Under the tree was an assortment of M16, M14, M1911, and M79 pieces. What a hoot! I remember that it was better to give than recieve, so we where finishing up a fire base on some God forsaken mountain top and the road into it so they got a really nice tree that was supose to go to some General (with all the goodies)and a couple Ma Duce's that they needed with a card from santa, we figured the Navy would never miss them and a few thousand rounds and grenades that they could use. Oh and that general and the officers club donated six cases of good burbon and scotch whiskey. All delivered buy the Engineers that built the Place. I hope they enjoyed their presents. I was with the 4th Inf Div in the Central Highlands 1969-70. Major locations in my AO included Dak To, Ben Het, Kontum, Pleiku, An Khe, Plei Djereng, Cheo Reo, Ban Me Thuot, and the Plei Trap Valley. Flying hunter-killer missions and preparing and directing artillery and air strikes took me and my detachment all over the AO. canovack, I was in country in 1970,and my Base camp when I got to be there was a little place called Dong Ba Thin, between Cam Ranh Bay and Nha Trang, all that was there was the 18th Engineers,a Air Cav unit and a small Special Forces unit. Our job was a security force so either Cam Rahn or Nha Trang could be ready if one or the other got over ran. But Like I said I was hardly ever there, I was part of what was called a Pre Constuct Platoon, we would go in alot of the time by chooper, good old chinooks, and clear enough jungle so we could get our dozers etc. in and then clear the land and start making roads in and out of bases, mostly fire bases, our roads normally met one being built coming the other way. My main job other wise was as a tunnel rat, so went all over the place, including most of the places you mentioned, who knows you guys might have helped gover our butts a couple of times. Thank God. Aside from the blade time I had in UH-1 and OH-6 helicopters, I also logged a fair amount of time in CH-47s too. We used the hooks as bombers by dropping 24 55 gallon drums of CS-2 off the tail gates. The CS-2 was fairly persistent and served the purpose of restricting selected terrain from enemy use. I recall one time that I got a wild hair, and instead of dropping drums of CS-2, we dropped drums of napalm with bursters. Once the higher HQ of the units with the Chinooks heard about that, they put a stop to it. It sure was interesting..... Trying to repel out of those darn chinoks was a real bi--h with all that down draft. it was hard enough out of a huey, those Shit Hooks as we called them was and could get to be a real e ride for sure. a couple guys ended up coming down upside down and spining around like a top, talk about being sick, Ha ha Har. Oh and the headake from the chain saw slapping them up along side thier helmets, real funny now but I bet those guys still don't think so.I rember one time our 60 gunner dropped the 60 about 50ft, and really messed it up and got some kind of big trouble for it. Of all the choppers in which I flew, I liked the hook the least. It was big, noisy, and it was always stinky because of the exhaust fumes being blown into the cargo bay from those two huge rotors. I was very happy when my detachment got a new 2Lt, so I could assign all of the bombing missions to him with the damned hooks. Holy crap.....What sort of pussy lieutenant screws a troop into paying for a machine gun that was accidentally dropped from an aircraft.....in combat? I can tell you one thing he (the second lewy) didn't last very long. He had an accident that got his butt sent to doing only dest duty with a big pillow to sit on, because he had a nice big chunk of it missing, and it was one of those wunds that he couldn't get a purple heart for, HA HA HA HA. He was one of those that came out of OCS, because he couldn't make into West Point. I think you know the type, most learn from the troops, real quick, and became good leaders and became 1st lewy's, and Capt's, but we just got stuck with one of those that didn't listen to those of us and our NCO's that had been around awhile, you know the the type I'm talking about. The whole system was known as the Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT). I wrote the test plan for the system back in 1974. In 1975, we commenced the test under controlled conditions that employed an airborne infantry battalion of the 193rd Infantry Brigade in what was then the Panama Canal Zone. The test objective was to determine suitability for Army adoption and use. The Army acted as the executive agency for the test and evaluation for all of the Department of Defense. From the technical standpoint, the Kevlar helmet was proven to be ballistically superior to the M1 steel helmet. From the service standpoint, the Kevlar helmet was also proven to be superior to the M1 helmet. When the testing was completed and all data were evaluated, our conclusion was that the PASGT was suitable for use by the Army (and by extension all of DoD). This suitability involved improved comfort, balance, and size tariffs along with lighter weight and superior protection against battlefield fragmentation munitions. By-the-way.....No helmet was ever intended to protect the wearer from direct assault of a bullet. Now, I am going to post this and resume discussion below, since I will likely get cut off for too much text. The test continued until 1977, at which time I had departed Tropic Test Center for another assignment. That said, however, my name still appeared as an author on the final test report. During the test, we heard some concerns from soldiers concerning bear1's comments about washing and cooking in the steel helmet. Now, to set the record straight, when the M1 steel helmet is used to heat things over a fire or stove, some very significant damage results to the helmet. The temper of the one pound steel helmet is annealed by the heat, resulting in a loss of ballistic protection to the head of the wearer. What this means, is that all of those ancillary uses of the old steel pot were being done contrary to actual policy, regulations, and directions for individual/unit maintenance. I was, and continue to be, a firm believer in the Kevlar helmet. Having used and worn both helmets (Kevlar and steel) there is no doubt in my mind that when my test conclusions and recommendations advised the Secretary of the Army to adopt the Kevlar helmet, that I had fulfilled my obligation to America's fighting forces to provide them the very best ballistic protection coupled with comfort and other human factors that we could develop. That my helmet has been adopted by many foreign armies and many American police forces substantiates the value of the contribution made by the efforts of the developers of the helmet and the exhaustive test and evaluation that I conducted and provided our Department of Defense Acquisition decision makers.
