Gun Control: A Relic of Racism

September 19, 2011

(GunReports.com) -- Derek Scammon, a representative of the Hawaii Concealed Carry group, wrote a nice piece on the Hawai'i Free Press website. He said:

Racism is a word that is, unfortunately, tossed around all too freely in modern-day America. While it has become a catch-all villain in politics, responsible for all manner of Very Bad Things, there was a time when racism was a cherished institution in these United States. And although our nation has made great strides in confronting and vanquishing the evil of racism, some trappings remain, notably in the form of gun control.

The origin of gun control laws in America had little, if anything, to do with controlling crime; the laws were intended to prevent slaves and freed blacks from defending themselves or rebelling against the state and local governments which persecuted them relentlessly. Throughout the history of our nation, gun control laws have been aimed primarily at blacks, and only in the last few decades has the focus of gun control shifted from targeting minorities to targeting all Americans.

Well, this article is right on the money. It is good that people of all colors are educating themselves on the basics of human rights. Ignorance never accomplished any good thing. Let's face it the firearm is the equalizer; such that, the weak and the strong are on equal turf.

One would think that with all the other cries against racism, in all of the other venues and circumstances in which we hear those cries, those who are traditionally targeted in racial prejudice would join in the battle against gun control as a racist action. It is true, as tovlogos states above.....the firearm is the great equalizer.

Have we not overcome racism? We all live and eat together. We know in the 21 centry their will always be someone of lesser stature. We do not need to be aggressive toward another. Lets overcome challenges together and not wait for imposed sanctions. The statement maybe correct however the rational is and mindset is troubling.

Be certain to elect Palin during your next election. She will weed out the old and bring in NEW. Elect Palin for President. Keep your RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS>

If we could just manage to turn the tide of opinion against guns that is held by our black citizens, Jewish citizens and female citizens, we'd have the battle won hands down. Somehow all three of those groups have been convinced that they should be unarmed walking victims in order to be safe. If we could change that, we'd turn a majority of Americans into gun owners, crime would practically disappear, the Brady types would go into the closet, and we could stop worrying about gun rights and start pushing for clean-up of government.

The question is, how do we accomplish that?

I fear, davidb, that you are proposing a rather tall order. That said, however, education IS the key toward understanding. We, who post in this forum, are all essentially preaching to the choir. And while it is good that we do it, our most profitable results will likely come when we preach to those who are uneducated concerning the benefits of firearms ownership and use. It is of paramount importance that when we do educate our friends and associates concerning our love of firearms, that we do so in a nonthreatening manner. It may be that we must first enlighten them in terms of the sporting applications of firearms, but while doing so, we must skillfully integrate the most important reasons for firearms ownership. As we are all aware, the Second Amendment has nothing whatsoever to do with the shooting sports..... It has everything to do with maintaining our freedoms and safeguarding ourselves and our loved ones from the predations of criminals.....from without and within our nation's borders. Once we have "gotten the attention" of our "students" by providing them with the "fun" side of firearms ownership, the way will be clear for indoctrinating them in the very serious reasons for defending the Second Amendment.

David d. If your desire is to change the tide, you should offer to take someone to the range and demonstrate to them the fun of sporting firearm shooting. We need to encourage, reassure, and enlighten them carrying or wanting to shoot firearms for weekend hobby is enjoyable, and the sport require some skill, of which can be obtained through practice and mindset. My wife questioned the reasons why, if and when; - When I requested she take the course for firearms in Canada, with said course she was compelled to shoot ten shots, keeping those ten shots on the smallest of targets. She was amazed at how well she performed, yet interested enough to have hit the bulles eye seven out of ten shots, for the first time ever shooting a firearm she performed extremely well. Now that she is licensed to own and shoot, she can attend, have fun when convenient. If we encourage your friend or colleague to a match at the local shooting range over lunch or some skeet while on business will only make you improve your shot but increase the interest in the sport.
