(GunReports.com) -- Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) announced this week that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will testify on Feb. 2 before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about his role in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives now-infamous Operation Fast and Furious, The National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action reports.
Issa, who is chairman of the House committee, and Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) have led an ongoing investigation into the role of Holder and the Department of Justice in the operation.
According to a release from Rep. Issa, Holder will be asked to testify on what happened during Fast and Furious and how the DOJ has responded to the congressional investigation into the program. This will include the DOJ's refusal to disclose information following a Feb. 4, 2011 letter to Sen. Grassley, which the Department has withdrawn because it contained false information denying allegations made by whistleblowers about Fast and Furious. The committee's investigation has found documentation that numerous members of the Justice Department knew the letter to Congress contained false information both before it was sent and later withdrawn.
"The Department of Justice's conduct in the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious has been nothing short of shameful," said Issa."From its initial denials that nothing improper occurred, to efforts to silence whistleblowers who wanted to tell Congress what really happened, to its continuing refusal to discuss or share documents related to this cover-up, the Justice Department has fought tooth and nail to hide the full truth about what occurred and what senior officials knew. Attorney General Holder must explain or reverse course on decisions that appear to put the careers of political appointees ahead of the need for accountability and the Department's integrity."
Fast on the heels of Issas announcement that Holder will testify, the DOJ supplied congressional investigators with 482 pages of subpoenaed internal documents relevant to the Fast and Furious investigation.
As we reported last month, at least 90 congressmen have either signed Rep. Paul Gosar's (R-Ariz.) "no confidence" (in Holder) resolution or believe Holder should step down.
The headline should read: 'Holder to Lie on Fast and FuriousBefore House Committee'. God I hope it's televised. I want a DVD. I'm sure he's going to do his absolute best Charles Durning / Gov. of Texas routine - "ooooo, I love to do a little sidestep, now you see me now you don't and then I'm gone....". The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is going big-time and now it's the Best Little White House in Washington. Holder will plead the fifth and not even bother to lie.Even Congress will not hold the DOJ to accountability in public. Let's see where this goes.... Not gonna go anywhere PVB. Even if they did indict, which would be way down the road, a conviction even further, BHO can pardon him way before ANYTHING happens. These guys are bulletproof. Unless of course, they are getting a know job in the Oval Office. Then it is General Quarters. You're correct Cecil, but I had to get subscribed! ;) LOL. Semper Fi. Let's be realistic about the potential results of this testimony. Would we all (or least most) like to see Holder's feet put to the fire and have him either impeached or resign in disgrace? You betchum Red Rider. But, discouragingly, at this point, it is more political gamesmanship than a search for truth and justice--after all, election day is coming. Hopefully the result will be the same, irrespective of the motives, and somebody will answer for the deaths that this absurd plan caused. Actually I'd prefer to see him jailed, but as a pragmatist I know I'll see that the day after tiny flying Obamas come out of my hiney. So I'd 'settle' for impeachment or resignation. Maybe I'm just way out in 'lefty field', but it seems I'm always more willing to seek real punishment for politicians who break the law than are my 'conservative' friends. At least more willing than any of the conservative politicians are.... David - lefty field? A lefty would be making excuses for Holder...... P V B - One of 'your' lefties might make excuses. But 'your' lefties come from the GOP portrayal of anyone outside that party, while mine comes from living and working among 'lefties', including union members. We aren't all the way the GOP's current clown posse wants you to think we are. 'Mine' believe in the people (not in trusting the wealthy) to make our nation's decisions, in the sanctity of The Constitution, and in the rule of law. We don't believe in a privileged class who get to carry guns when we don't, don't believe government officials should be permitted to break the law and walk around free, and do believe that those who do act illegally should get more time in prison than we 'peons' do for those crimes - because they have a standard to set for the rest of us and were trusted by the citizenry, not to mention that their crimes are usually against every citizen at the same time, while ours are only against a few IF they are against citizens at all and not corporations. I must give credit where it is due, and such most deservedly goes to david b. While it is common among Second Amendment adherents to vilify the so-called "left" or "liberal", david b has gone, in past posts and here, to clarify to many of us just what the terms actually mean in the practical sense of the words. It is incumbent on all of us to recognize that there are Second Amendment adherents among Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, etc just as there are anti-Second Amendment detractors in those same groups. Rights of Americans transcend party affiliations and whatever labels we may choose to use in describing our political philosophy. Thank you sir. I do try to present, when those opportunities aries, the face of most liberals - your neighbors, guys - not the face that Glenn Beck and Sarah, and Rick, and the Tea Party would tell you you're seeing. The mechanic down the street is probably union, as are many of the folks you do business with. They're not all commies - they're good loyal American citizens. You may have fought beside them, and they still own guns. You buy your groceries from them, you liquor, they repair your cars, your roof, do your taxes, etc. Maybe they're more 'conservative' than New Yorkers, but you'd be surprised how many of them agree with you on at least some issues. I know I've ranted about the GOP and extreme conservatism, but I try to remember that you guys - my 'friends' - support that to some degree, so I need to at least consider it. And it does bother me when somebody just lumps every Democrat with Nancy Pelosi or some stupid proposed bill, because I expect Republicans to vote against stupid bills from their side. (I'm usually disappointed, btw.) All in all, I'm just trying to help us all remember that we have more in common as Americans than we have in opposition as political party members. There are effectively only two, so they both have to accommodate a lot of folks with different views. Some of us might even think so alike that we wonder why we're supporting different parties. And after all that, I'm still hoping somebody better than Obama will be up for election on your side. I don't want to vote for him again, but will if Ron Paul isn't a candidate. The rest of the candidate wannabes just don't cut it with me. Isn't there somebody in the GOP that isn't a goof-ball? AND btw, when the blue hats come across the water, you'll be shoulder to shoulder with armed liberals again - and we won't be carrying guns we got from you. We don't need no stinking Borrowed guns.... Let us all take a deep breath. I think what we are all asking for, is fairness and common sense from our government. Am I stupid or what? 'Nice discussion, david b. The one point on which I must disagree with you is your willingness to allow Obama a second term. I really think that we cannot afford the luxury of being permissive on this issue. For me, and for all with whom I converse, this election has got to be ABO.....Anyone But Obama! It's not just about guns anymore..... It's about preserving the United States of America as a nation of laws wherein free enterprise reigns supreme and where government doe not inject itself ever increasingly into every aspect of our lives. True. ABO. But, let us not be fooled. Remember what the Grace Commission Report stated, government has become to large to effectively control by anyone. 2nd Amendment supporters are usually a little more centrist than left in our area but Canovack has it right. The 2nd transcends party lines.I ,for one, am all about getting Congress to buck up and get rid of the likes of Obama and Holder, holding them to the strictest interpretation of their constitutional powers, and giving them no other power over the people. Nov. 2012 is coming! David - I think you know by now I was yanking your chain a bit because you often don't sound like a "lefty" beyond stating you are; although I like your response. Honestly though, the description you give of a "lefty" fits most Americans I know. The elite rich folk are not confined to the GOP, as you know. Most of us common-folk are essentially moderates with a slight leaning one way or the other. The extremists give us all a bad name. If independents were allowed to vote in primaries throughout the country, I think you would see a much larger pool of non-R's & D's than we currently have. As for unions, we aren't likely to agree. I have first hand experience there, and the bulk of unions do nothing for their members. If you want to see greed and corruption on a grand scale, look closely at the leadership of some unions and they are every bit as bad as, and often worse than, their "corporate" enemies. In the end though, you are correct as we all have more in common than we do differences. Please keep Canovack's point in mind - a 2nd term Obama is an incredibly dangerous prospect... If he appoints another judge or two, the consequences could last forever. Frankly, I'm of the opinion that ABO is ABI - Anybody But Incumbent, regardless of party. Ditto that PVB. I recently posted some thoughts on Facebook in which I advised that in the November election, all incumbents should be voted out of office.....as long as there is an acceptable challenger who has been well vetted and determined to be what we want in office. The message to the remaining incumbents, still in office, would be frighteningly clear..... Shape up, or in 2014 you will also be voted out. And, if they didn't get the message, in 2014 they should be forcibly retired. I don't know how we could coordinate a campaign to accomplish what I describe above, but maybe if each of us floated the suggestion to all of our contacts and associates, we could get a grassroots movement going.
