Romney Tramples the 2nd Amendment

According to the national polls, Governor Romney is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. Given his hostile record and his unashamed quotes supporting even more gun control - you and I need to all we can to get the word out here in Iowa.

Recently several of you have contacted us to ask us about specific candidates and their responses or lack thereof to our Presidential Survey. Many of you said that you “knew” Governor Romney was “bad on guns” but that you didn’t really know why. Governor Romney has not yet replied to our candidate survey. To be blunt, I don’t expect that he will. Let’s review his statements and record.

Mandatory Waiting Periods: While a candidate, Romney told the Boston Herald that he supported a mandatory 5 day waiting period when it came to buying handguns. Think of how many abused spouses, who are in fear for their lives, are unable to secure protection for themselves because of anti-gun policies like this. Criminals don’t have to wait to buy a gun when they want to terrorize citizens.

Mandatory Background Checks: Romney has been an outspoken supporter of making law abiding citizens submit to background checks in a misguided effort to catch criminals trying to buy guns. But as study after study points out, background checks for law abiding citizens don’t accomplish anything – other than giving the government a record of who is buying guns. Just like the waiting period issue, criminals don’t have to submit to these background checks.

PERMANENT Assault Weapons Ban: While the Governor of Massachusetts, Romney signed into law a PERMANENT ban on so called “assault weapons” – guns that many of us use for self-defense, hunting, or sporting purposes. This mirrored the law that was signed by President Bill Clinton back in 1994 and went even farther. However where the federal ban had a 10 year “sunset” clause that rendered it meaningless in 2004, Governor Romney made sure that the ban he signed into law would NEVER automatically expire. In the January 2008 debate Romney said, “I would have signed the (federal) assault weapon ban that came to his (the president’s) desk. I said I would have supported that and signed a similar bill in our state. It was a bill worked out, by the way, between pro-gun lobby and anti-gun lobby individuals. Both sides of the issue came together...”

Lesson Learned: It is because of quotes like the one above that Iowa Gun Owners will NEVER compromise on our 2nd Amendment freedoms. The minute you do, the anti-gunners like Governor Romney will immediately claim to have the support from gun owners and we will lose even more of our gun rights.

Please take a few minutes to contact Gov. Romney’s Iowa campaign chairwoman, Rep. Renee Schulte at 319-431-6150 and ask her about Governor Romney’s hostility towards the 2nd Amendment.

Don’t expect a welcome reception – after all Rep. Schulte broke a written promise and voted against Constitutional Carry this year on the floor of the Iowa House.

Please make this call today. Remember, your voice is magnified tremendously right now when all of these candidates are vying for your attention, votes and money.

Although I am totally opposed to a ban on assault weapons and also mandatory waiting periods, I can't believe these comments below. It was written by a complete idiot. Mandatory waiting periods This is suppose to protect abused spouses ???? If they are that abused why are they staying there and not calling the police. Then he goes on to say that criminals don't have to wait. Is he saying that if I tell the dealer that I'm a criminal I don't have to wait??? Mandatory background checks Maybe I missed something.....Are criminals now required to wear a sign telling everyone that they are criminals? If there is no background check, how does the dealer know the purchaser is a felon? Again, he is saying that if I tell the dealer that I am a felon I can buy a gun without a check !!!!!!!!! I pray that we have someone with a brain out there defending our 2nd amendments rights.

Romney is a RINO. The most critical role the next president will have is in appointing Supreme Court justices. Romney will follow in the path of other spineless Republicans and appoint "middle of the road" jurists who, once on the bench, will reverse Heller. Elect a Conservative or keep Obama. "Moderate" Republicas have historically done more harm than the socialist President has so far.

2WarAbnVet: I think what they are referring to is background checks for private citizens, which would have the effect of shutting down private sales. An abused spouse can tell the cops but often they will not act until the victim is in the hospital or morgue.

That isn’t what was said, your reading that into the statement. They are referring to background checks period, not for private sales. Your point of spousal abuse…. I don’t think that a waiting period of 3 to 5 days is going to change anything as far as the abuse. I don’t think there should be any waiting period. In my case I currently own 5 handguns, so a waiting period to purchase a 6th is idiotic. If I wanted to shoot someone I could use any of the 5 I already own. My point is if you are against anything use your brain and come up with a good reason to be against it not some lame comment.

The bevy of statements above substantiates my opinion of Romney as a RINO. Let's remember, Romney authored a health care law, very similar to Obamacare, during his tenure as governor of Massachusetts. Also, take a look at his record of support.....or rather animosity.....toward the Second Amendment. One final thought.....If a Republican can successfully be elected as governor of a predominantly blue state, you have to wonder where his true sympathies really are. The same can be said for Tim Pawlenty and Chris Christie.....

why would one expect romney from Massachusettes be pro-gun? A decades brainwashing in states like Mass., N.J. R.I.&N.Y. regarding evil of handguns associating it with criminals, most politicians cannot and will not change these laws, no matter facts ststing otherwise, since very little support exists in their legislatures for needed votes. It is so bad in New York, where one needs a license to possess a pistol in their house. Misdemeanors or even felony charges will be imposed for not having one.

2WarAbnVet needs to brush up on his reading comprehension. The comment was referring to the abused spouse having to wait to buy a weapon to protect herself and that the criminals buy their guns on the street from their homies and don't go through a background check. It was reported this morning that Romney is bulldozing his 12 million dollar 3000 sqft mansion in California because it is too small and will replace with 10,000sqft version. He owns 3 such mansions nationwide. While I have nothing against anyone making and accumulating a lot of money, what we DON'T need right now is a Rep. candidate who flaunts his ostentatious lifestyle when so many people are hurting in America. Does'nt matter how many good ideas he might have if he renders himself unelectable and his position on the 2nd Amendment alone will be enough to torpedo his canidacy.

chiefcam - it's because that's where the cities are. Typically, the more urban an area, the more they want the gummint to take care of them. When it comes to crime, misguided souls buy the elitist hyperbole that guns are somehow more inherently evil than any other inanimate objects. Why they feel the need to punish the gun and let the perp walk always amazes me, but back to your point... Since most of the cities are in "the North" (with exceptions as David mentioned) that's why the North typically seems more anti-gun.
