Disassembly and Reassembly of the Browning Cynergy Shotgun

To paraphrase a line from the book John M. Browning, American Gunmaker, the story of Browning's genius is the story of the evolution of modern firearms. John M. Browning was issued 128 patents on at least 80 models in nearly every caliber from .22 Short up to the 37mm cannon shell. Those patents covered automatic, semi-automatic, lever, and pump actions.

Upgrading the Ruger Mini-14 the Brownells Way, Part I and Part II

Brownells makes it very easy for any shooter, experienced or not, to convert his Ruger Mini-14 into a tricked-out rifle that meets your exacting wants and needs. The first step in this customization process is to determine what I am going to use the rifle for. Foremost, I wanted this rifle for varmint hunting, particularly night-time hunting. My secondary use is for self-defense purposes at home.

B&C Records: Whitetail, Sheep, Grizzly Entries on the Rise

Trophy-class specimens of whitetail deer, Stone's sheep, Dall's sheep, desert sheep and grizzly bears are becoming more common afield, based on newly compiled records by the Boone and Crockett Club. However, trophy records are declining for caribou.

NSSF Updates Firearms Retailer Survey Results

For the past five years, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has surveyed federally licensed firearms retailers across the country to find out what products are the biggest sellers and who is buying. NSSF has just issued the latest version of that report from an online survey conducted last month. The data shows which types of firearms and ammunition were most popular in 2012, and at the same time allows retailers to compare their businesses to that of other gun stores across the country.

NRA Says Magazine Ran Fast & Furious Disinformation Piece

July 2, 2012

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com) — In support of Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. and his congressional allies this week was an obviously coordinated media campaign, aimed at rewriting the history of "Fast and Furious" and smearing the whistleblowing BATFE agents who alerted Congress to the scandal, the NRA-ILA reports.

In an article published the day before the vote and written by a former Bill Clinton campaign operative, Fortune magazine claimed that virtually everything we know about this disaster--after more than a year of investigations by House and Senate committees and by every media outlet in the country that's dared to touch the issue--is false. Tellingly, many of Fortune's sources were agents "speaking out for the first time." (Another BATFE official, who had not previously spoken to the media, gave an interview that appeared in the Washington Post the day of the vote.)

In its piece, Fortune claimed:

That Agent John Dodson and other whistleblowers who brought the operation to light were actually rogue agents who jeopardized their careers at the BATFE just to settle scores over petty disputes with a supervisor--who happens to be Fortune's main source and the "hero" of the article.

That Agent Dodson had actually (in a separate and much smaller case) advocated using the same tactics he risked his career to denounce in "Fast and Furious." What's more believable: Fortune's version, or Agent Dodson's explanation that he proposed the tactic on orders of his supervisor, who was also in charge of "Fast and Furious"?

That gun prosecutions were thwarted by a pro-gun federal prosecutor, even though that prosecutor worked for U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, who had a long record of anti-gun activity on Capitol Hill and in the Clinton White House.

Most outrageously, if these allegations are true, the Justice Department itself falsely admitted that "gunwalking" tactics were used--for example, when Attorney General Holder acknowledged that in his Nov. 8, 2011 testimony--even though the embarrassing admission deepened the congressional investigation.

And if the Justice Department was wrong to rescind the Feb. 2011 letter denying that "gunwalking" occurred," the subpoenaed documents concerning that letter should show that. If the documents might exonerate the administration, why are the White House and Justice Department fighting so hard against releasing them?

Fortune also repeats a string of lies about the larger context of "Fast and Furious":

—That the real problem is weak gun laws, including the lack of "a real-time database of gun sales"--in other words, national gun registration. It should be no surprise that Fortune points to that, when there are already at least three emails proving that the BATFE wanted to use information from "Fast and Furious" to support its border-state registration scheme for multiple rifle sales.

-—hat it's "nearly impossible" to bring cases against straw purchasers--even though the BATFE website contains dozens of press releases announcing the arrest, conviction and sentencing of straw purchasers. That straw purchasing penalties are "minimal."

Here are the penalties Fortune calls "minimal": Any statement to a licensed dealer that is "intended or likely" to deceive the dealer about the legality of a sale is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

"Knowingly making any false statement" in a dealer's records--such as falsely claiming on a transfer form that you are the actual buyer--is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

That "2,000 weapons are smuggled daily from the U.S. into Mexico." There is no credible source for this figure. If it were true, smuggling to Mexico would account for 730,000 guns a year--nearly a tenth of the guns produced in the U.S. or imported here every year. That's obviously impossible.

—Another recurring claim this week was that "gunwalking" began under the Bush administration. In reality, there is no parallel between "Fast and Furious" and earlier operations such as "Wide Receiver." Specifically:

In "Wide Receiver," the Mexican government was informed and involved, and was supposed to interdict the guns as they were tracked into Mexico. In "Fast & Furious," the Mexican government was never informed and was never called on to interdict any of the guns.

—The guns lost in the "Wide Receiver" program were lost primarily by the Mexican authorities, or due to the failure of electronic tracking devices. In "Fast & Furious," agents were specifically ordered to end surveillance.

—“Wide Receiver" was shut down when BATFE officials learned of the lost guns. It took the death of Brian Terry to shut down "Fast & Furious."

—“Wide Receiver" involved a few hundred guns, most of which were recovered. The program nevertheless was considered a failure by BATFE officials and was terminated for that reason. "Fast & Furious" involved thousands of guns, the bulk of which are still at large.

The ties between the mainstream media outlets, including TV, newspapers, and periodicals, to the agenda of the leftists, are becoming more and more obvious. The truth concerning almost any topic is becoming increasingly scarce and difficult to find. In my youth, one could reliably accept what was broadcast on radio or TV as being essentially truthful. The same is true of the written journalism of newspapers and magazines. Now, it seems that virtually every outlet of so-called "news" must be suspect due to whatever its motives might be for publishing or broadcasting whatever is released. It's getting to be damned difficult to know things. While the journalistic trades so jealously guard their First Amendment rights, it seems that the "people's right to know" is open to question as to just what media think the people ought to know.

Can anyone say "1984".

I don't see much differance between Fast and Furious and Wide Receiver. Because the government of Mexico knew about it is supposed to make a differance? That's kind of like letting the Afghani warlords go after Bin Laden when they had him cornered. All were bad choices and heads should be rolling.

Lies surrounding Fast & Furious? No! Who-da thunk it.

Remember that gun-runner Holder had pardoned under Clinton? Maybe Holder is a gun-runner?

Guess we are going to need to tune in Al Jazerra, Radio Moscow or the BBC Worldwide if we want to get the real news.

In the long-gone days before TV and radio, most towns of any size had at least two newspapers. One was usually Republican leaning and the other Democrat. But, despite party affiliation you could usually get the truth from either one. Albeit the truth on any given issue may have been emphasized or de-emphasized depending on biases. Radio and TV later took over from the papers with the same caveat. TV news was a separate department in a network and truth and fact checking were gospel. Now it seems like any major media is becoming just as reliable as what is spewed out on the internet. None of them seem to care about facts or truth, particularly if those interfere with their preexisting beliefs. Disgusting. Pravda is now probably more accurate.

Once the news networks (TV) were forced to show a profit, that was THE END FOLKS.

ajwrangler - apparently you didnt read the entire article if you are still having to question the differences between Operation Wide Receiver and Fast and Furious. 1)No one was killed under Operation Wide Receiver. 2)The Mexican goverment was informed and included. Under Fast and Furious not only were they NOT included. but once the guns made it to Mexico, they were not informed.

Both of those programs were just pure horseshit. If you want to know who heads the cartels and who is buying the guns, all you have to do is bribe one of the Mexican government officials OR, ask any Mexican on the street. They ALL know who they are. And if the NSA and CIA don't know, from their intel techniques, then they too should be abolished.

Well stated, Cecil. The one thing that just glares at us, to the extent that it is almost beyond comprehension, is the disgusting revelation that an agency of the US government whose mission, purpose, and objectives are to enforce laws to prevent the very thing that the said agency willfully perpetrated. When the law enforcers willfully break the laws that they are sworn to enforce, we're in some big trouble.

Also, the excuse given, that BATFE wanted to trace the weapons to find out where they went is patently stupid on its face. How the hell are weapons supposed to be traced when they are given to criminals to use in illegal activities that the criminals deliberately try to keep secret. About the only way I can see that working is if one already knows who the criminals are. Since BATFE already knew the identities of the criminals, what conceivable benefit did they expect to gain from the illegal activity in which they so readily participated?

This whole idea is so ludicrous.....that we are being asked to believe that the weapons were given to the criminals in order to find the criminals, that it becomes abundantly apparent that the whole original intent of Fast & Furious, along with Wide Receiver, was to discredit the Second Amendment rights of Americans, so that more draconian laws might be palatable to the American people.

The smoke that the government is blowing up my ass is starting to come out my ears. I know I am not very PC but I just call it the way I see it and not very eloquently.

playhookie - there's a big difference between the two. At a minimum, during WR, they quit when it did not produce results. Further, they never lied about what happened nor stonewalled congress. To my knowledge, agents never directed FFL's to allow sales to "prohibited persons" during WR.

AJW - long time no "see"... Nice to see y'all again!

Danny29az - FYI, the author of a post is below the text...

As for journalism, I was discussing this with an attorney buddy after he sent me a link to the referenced article. He had heard of F&F, but wasn't really in the loop. I informed him of some of the details left out of the article that should be obvious to anyone who knows anything about legally buying and selling guns. He was debating the points with me (he is an attorney after all), so I reminded him of our running dialogue on the lack of intestinal fortitude and integrity in the media. As Visigoth and Canovack said, we have to question the motives of the broadcasters each and every time we obtain news. Remember the video of Holder telling a women's group we need to brainwash our children that guns are evil? Well, Eric Doucher isn't the only one in power who believes we can all be brainwashed. That's why we are bombarded with sound bites and never get the full story. Soon enough, we'll all believe the big lie because that's all we've ever heard. Combined with who owns "the media" and their political bent (I know, duh), that's why we are getting sound bites, and nothing else...

Honestly, I'm still not convinced the whole F&F motive was to create anti-gun data; I really think there was some other agenda that "we" haven't stumbled onto yet; nor will we without real journalists.

Y'all know the Sinola cartel head's kid was born in an LA hospital, right?

I did not know that PVB but I am not at all surprised. Hell, he is probably already on the government tit.

Since the Nixon ordeal, media sides have been carefully picked by each administration. We get all the news the administration sees fit to print or publicize. However, the information highway is drastically improved since the vote on Nixon's impeachment. We now have biased watchdogs on both sides so that we can read both sides and MAYBE find a little truth within 2 minutes of the occurence. I like to believe that there are still a few honest reporters out there. I may end up like Diogenes...........

I don't think it is the reporters as much as the management of the stations. A couple of days ago, here in San Antonio, there was a 2 minute blurb on the local news concerning the "fracking" going on south of the city. Seems that the oil companies are dumping the toxic chemical they use to frack, down an old water well, which is located right over two of the underground aquifers that supplies water to most of the surrounding areas. No follow up. And what really amazes me is that there is no public outcry. Nice to have jobs but not at the expense of polluting out drinking water. Zombie Day is just around the corner.

Danny29az, I beleive the comment made by playinghookie and my post were merged by accident. The only comment I made refered to the book/movie 1984. Specifically, the way the "government" rewrote the newspapers/history based upon the current wishes of the ruling class.

There are huge differences between F&F and WR, as indicated by others. All of which I am aware.

I'm sure there are plenty of cons to the pros of fracking, though I'd never heard the problem with chemical contamination. (There are a lot of stories coming out of the Poconos about the ills of the process.) This illustrates further that the media does not provide information for us to all come to our own conclusions, they simply feed us the bullet points we need to heartily jump on their bosses bandwagon.

alwrangler, I read the article and am not convinced. I worked in the oil industry for 20 years and know them to be liars and thieves. The article provided nothing more that a well written essay saying, "it ain't so". Dishwashing soap? I am betting no. In fact, the fracking fluid is a trade secret and they even refused to divulge it's exact make up to the state of Texas when inquired. I know it won't stop, I know it creates jobs, I know it produces a product that we all need but 30 years from now, after I am dead and gone, people are going to say, "what the hell were we thinking?".

We were thinking money, money, money Cecil. The big companies ply our fears (employment in this case) to get us to see the bright side. It's the same strategy the big box stores use to get us in the door - save money, and lots of it! The next thing you know, we can't live without MaoMart, no matter how poorly they treat their employees or how destructive they are to the economy as a whole. Greed... Gluttony...

CecilB. Thanks for the info. Having never been in the oil industry, unfortunately, I have to "rely" on the information I am able to obtain from news outlets. I gave up on the LSM years ago but for the most part I have found CFP to be a viable outlet for factual information. Don't get me wrong. I am not contesting your comment about teh honesty of the oil companies because as PVB says, it is all about the money.

I will most assuredly have to do a bit more research on the issue to become more knowledgeable on the subject. Again, thanks for the input.

ajwrangler. I was certainly not offended and I too could be wrong about fracking but I was forced to do a lot of sleezy things when I was hauling oil and witnessed a lot more, so I am just not convinced. The oil industry spends a lot of money on PR so just be skeptical. Have a great day.

CwcilB. Right back at ya. You have a great day as well.
