New 'Cartridge' book covers 'Pipsqueaks' to the 'Big Boys'

(GunReports.com) -- A new cartridge book by Todd Woodard, editor of Gun Tests magazine, revels in the fascinating complexities of bullets, brass, and powder for hundreds of rounds hunters and shooters love.

The Shooter’s Bible Guide to Cartridges (available at Amazon.com, BN.com, and Walmart.com, as well as most brick-and-mortar locations) covers hundreds of cartridges in its 224 four-color pages. But it focuses on a few dozen of the most popular cartridges that have proven themselves over the last century, detailing their complex history and side-by-side performance.

"This is not Woodard’s Big Book of Every Cartridge Known to Man, Most of Which You Don’t Care About," said the author. "It's a guide to the lore and legend of the most popular cartridges ever created."

The book opens with a comprehensive list of cartridge terms and definitions then moves to "The Pipsqueaks," small rounds that have big followings. Chapter 4, "Remarkable Rimfires," covers the most popular cartridges made--billions annually.

Chapter 7, "4K 22s," explores the development of the fastest centerfire rounds you can find today. "Pretenders to the 270," "The Mice That Roar," "Thumpers On Both Ends," "The ‘Unknown’ 36s," and "The Big Boys" are a few other titles in the book's 30 main chapters.

In the back are extensive tables of Wildcat, Proprietary, and Obsolete Cartridges, as well as a massive Cartridge Dimensions compilation.

"I got newfound respect for the ubiquitous 22 Long Rifle," Woodard said. "Previously, I hadn't known much about the 6.5mm cartridges, and now I want to build a rifle chambered for a round from that family. I also enjoyed learning more about the Weatherby family of cartridges and their jaw-dropping performance."
