(GunReports.com) A Times Watch examination of New York Times legal reporter Charlie Savage makes the point that Attorney General Eric Holders malfeasance is being downplayed.
The article by the Media Research Centers Clay Walters says that Times Reporter Savage played softball with Attorney General Eric Holder on Sundays front page: A Lightning Rod Undeterred by G.O.P. Thunder. The online headline even more strongly suggested that Holder was standing brave and firm against a torrent of politically motivated Republican criticism: Under Partisan Fire, Holder Soldiers On.
Savage has previously downplayed the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal, when the Justice Department signed off on a plan that allowed guns to flow untracked into the U.S. and Mexico, putting thousands of illegally purchased firearms on the street, one of which led to the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Savages November 8 coverage of Holders testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee omitted Holders admission that his initial statements to Congress about his knowledge of the gun-walking were "inaccurate, while the Washington Post recognized its importance with Page 2 placement and a headline mention.
Savages Sunday piece similarly downplayed the scandal, while allowing Holder to play the race card against some of his conservative critics.
For nearly three years, Republicans have attacked Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on national security and civil rights issues. For months, they have criticized him over a gun-trafficking investigation gone awry, with dozens of leaders calling for his resignation. Last week, more than 75 members of Congress co-sponsored a House resolution expressing no confidence in his leadership.
With F.B.I. agents standing guard outside his hotel room on Tuesday, Mr. Holder spoke hours before delivering a speech at the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential library here that criticized the largely Republican-led efforts to put new restrictions on voting in the name of fighting fraud.
At that moment, protesters were rallying outside the library, some in support of stricter voter identification laws and others holding signs urging Mr. Holder to resign over the disputed gun-trafficking investigation, known as Operation Fast and Furious. Several dozen jeered when his motorcade arrived.
After graciously admitting that some conservatives were honest in their criticism, Holder cried racism.
But Mr. Holder contended that many of his other critics -- not only elected Republicans but also a broader universe of conservative commentators and bloggers -- were instead playing Washington gotcha games, portraying them as frequently conflating things, conveniently leaving some stuff out, construing things to make it seem not quite what it was to paint him and other department figures in the worst possible light.
Of that group of critics, Mr. Holder said he believed that a few -- the more extreme segment -- were motivated by animus against Mr. Obama and that he served as a stand-in for him. This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him, he said, both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that were both African-American.

We continue to hear that the NY Times circulation numbers are dwindling, and that the so-called newspaper is limiting its' distribution to out-of-state locations. Well, maybe folks are waking up to the notion that the NY Times has routinely overstepped its' journalistic license and charter by continuously criticizing the right-wing and glorifying the left-wing. It might as well change its' name to Pravda.....
Someone should help Mr. Savage wipe the african-american off of his nose. I am so glad I don't live in NY.
So, am I to understand that Savage is somehow equating Republican efforts to goat-screw voting rights over the last 3 elections with Issa and Grassley trying to get to the bottom of Fast and Furious? He didn't come out and say so, but it sounds as if he's alleging that the F&F investigation is a 'pay-back' for Holder investigating rigged voting in Florida and Ohio and other states. Even I don't believe THAT - and I do believe some seriously negative things about the GOP.
Whew! I first thought it was Savage Arms or Michael Savage. This is more expected.
The NY Times used to be able to proudly boast that it published "All The News That Is Fit To Print." Unfortunately now that once august newspaper has denigrated to licking the posterior of any politician or cause that its owners and editors like, while utterly ignoring any possibility of wrongdoing or error. This puff piece by Mr. Savage is just the latest in a long string of propaganda (Pravda) published by the Gray Lady.
Holder, et al., simply cannot grasp the fact that Americans don't like him, his policies, and his activities because he has become the Law-breaker-In-Chief. The color of his skin matters not one iota. A white, Hispanic, or Asian crook is just as much a crook as is a black one. Of course, it is now SOP to claim that one's critics are racist--it just might divert enough questions about what one knew and when he knew it (as it apparently did with Savage). Holder also fails to realize (or if he does, he is cynically ignoring it), that this is not a liberal/conservative issue. It is very much an issue of the chief law-enforcement officer of this nation apparently breaking the law and attempting to cover it up. That question should transcend party politics, as it did during Watergate. What can we expect next? Holder on national television telling us that "Your Attorney-General is not a crook?"
