David Schweikert is the Republican U.S. Representative for Arizona's 5th congressional district.

Congressman: Where is the outrage
-- and coverage -- of Fast and Furious?

October 24, 2011

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com) -- It seems that despite the magnitude of the Fast and Furious scandal, there isn’t much outrage, writes Congressman David Schweikert, who represents Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District.

Schweikert continues:

Arizonans don’t need me to tell them that Fast and Furious is a big story. This scandal started in our backyard — in the ATF’s Phoenix office — and was administered by a U.S. attorney appointed by President Obama.

Every step of this operation seems riddled with incompetence and dishonesty.

High-ranking U.S. officials used taxpayer money — stimulus money no less — to buy guns and ship them to Mexico. The administration claims these firearms were shipped to Mexico in an attempt to destabilize Mexican drug cartels.

A further investigation will help us determine if, in fact, the administration’s real agenda was indeed promoting gun control.

Not only did this incompetence sink the operation, it strengthened the cartels and destabilized Mexican security forces on the border.

In other words, under this then-secret program, thousands of guns were shipped over our borders and placed directly into the hands of criminals. Sadly, these guns can be traced to over 200 murders, including that of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and high-ranking Mexican officials.

Some have tried to say that Fast and Furious is simply a case of an overreaching federal government dropping the ball or botching an operation — that it was planned to do something different, that weapons were lost and that officials miscommunicated or were ill-informed.

However, as more evidence has come to light, it has become clear that this operation was not botched. The administration fully intended for guns to end up in the hands of Mexican criminals.

As an Arizonan watching this unfold in my backyard, I can also assure you this is more than feds dropping the ball. People are dying. American tax dollars are arming criminals and it seems the administration is trying to cover it up.

This is egregious.

Almost as egregious, is the fact that the mainstream media has largely seemed to ignore this scandal. Where is the media’s understanding of the scale of this operation? Where is the outrage for not only the actions of President Obama and Eric Holder, but for their inconsistent stories? Where is the outrage for the use of American tax dollars for criminal activity? Where is the outrage for the more than 200 lives lost?

There is a growing voice in the House, mine one of the strongest among them, that believes we need a special prosecutor to hold Eric Holder and the Justice Department accountable. We must put the facts together and properly lay them out on a timeline.

Let’s face it. If it turns out that our attorney general misled the House Oversight Committee in May, the honorable thing for him to do is tender his resignation.

However, the honorable thing for President Obama to do right now is to stop playing politics and come clean on what his Justice Department knew and when they knew it. Incompetence and dishonesty that cost lives cannot and will not be tolerated.

The truth of this operation must come out just as fast and furiously as it was withheld from us.

The main duty of our government is to protect her citizens. However, here in my backyard, taxpayer-funded weapons have taken lives. I do not know what else needs to be said for America to start listening.

I agree. BUT, since a "Fast & Furious" effort was taken by the Bush administration TWICE, I think that you'll get more and better coverage if you take a less partisan stance. Party politics stink.

Cut the crap jammo. Obama and Holder are corrupt as corrupt gets. Holder lied and should be tried in federal court. Had you lied or I lied to a federal officer we would be in federal prison just like Martha Stewart.

Jamo, If it is really true that the Bush administration carried out a Fast & Furious type program also (and I have never heard that before) I wish you would state your source. I am sincerely interested in knowing more about that. Whether it is the Obama admin only or Bush and Obama both, the public deserves to know all there is to know. Let the chips fall where they may.

I ,also, never heard anything like this about the Bush admin. before. Sounds made up to me, as the MSM would have loved to paint the Repubs with it.

I think you will find that Fox News, the only media source that seems interested in coverimng Fast & Furious, has allowed as how the original program began during Bush's administration, albeit under a different program title. In any event, it seems clear to me that the BATFE turned this Fast & Furious project into a witch hunt of border region FFL Dealers,.... got no really significant violations as claimed, and decided the "salt" the mine to improve their statistics, and botched the entire project with inadequate or non-existant follow-through

If only the MSM could give "Fast & Furious" the same attention they gave to "WMD's". I remember when Bush was President the first thing you heard on the news every night was how many soldiers died that day and they even kept a running tally. Now, no tally and the news of our soldiers is being swept under the rug along with Fast & Furious. Remember when the media was the watchdog for the people? Now it is pure agenda driven, sad.

Under GW, BATF did some sting operations on gun runing but NOTHING in comparison to this international gun "supply" operation; i.e. Fast & Furious BATF did not let "guns walk" to ruthless drug cartels without ANY means of tracking (the sole prurpose of F&F was to "collect the guns by the bodies")1

Again, as Holder/Obama unequivocally demonstrated with their carte blanche "order" to expand gun laws; i.e. long arm multiple sales in CA,AZ,NM,TX.......the SOLE PURPOSE of F&FF was to "justify" a Presidential EXECUTIVE ORDER, based on national security, to BAN THE SALE of all firarms >.22 cal with a detachable magazine....this would ban ~65% of all current new firearms sales.

+200 homocides is a "small price to pay" for this "ultimate" anti 2nd amendment objective!

Indict Holder & Impeach Obama, period!

No wonder liberals don't trust us with guns. They are untrustworthy themselves. Not only are they untrustworthy with guns, the are untrustworthy with our rights. They are afraid of what they'd do with guns and true freedom, and project their guilty fears on us. I'm tired with dealing with someone else's guilt. Time to clean the bastards out.

Just like little kids: "He did it, so it's OK for me to do it too." If Bush jumped out a window, would Obama do it too. To bad it ain't so.

Claytong & Mister E - Where were you guys about two weeks ago when there was a news post here about the Bush program? My memory isn't real good, but I think it was called "hidden something" - I want to say "hidden agenda" but that is NOT correct and I know it. It was NOT an exact duplicate of Gun Walker, but it too included the ATF permitting sales to straw buyers and 'watching' the guns as far as I can recall.

Google (or scroogle) Operation Wide Receiver.

THAT was it! Thanks P V B.

Yes, Operation Wide Receiver involved a sting operations to sell the guns and let them "walk" to observe distribution; i.e. "big fish!"

The difference is that Wide Receiver was "contemplatingpulling the trigger;" i.e. arrests and taking the guns off the street before "losing them," which has been a long standing practice of BATFE.

Fast & Furious made ABSOLUTELY NO ATTEMPT to "track" the guns and pull the trigger before "losing" them.....the "objective" of F&F was to "collect the guns as they tagged the toes" in order to create an "international incident; i.e. "US FFL's Sypplying the Cartels and are out of control......thus ban detachable magazine firearms >.22 cal".......which just happens to account for 65% of all new firearms sold in the US.

"'INTENT"........that is the operative issue here, F&F is all about circumventing the US Congress and 2nd Amendment and if "'blood has to spill"......collateral damage!

Wide Receiver was, indeed, conducted under the auspices of the Bush administration. It just didn't get out of hand the way Fast & Furious did with the Obama administration. Whoever thinks up these schemes has got to be some sort of nut. Whether Alberto Gonzalez or Eric Holder supported these travesties, it matters not. The whole idea of any law enforcement agency conducting operations that violate the very laws that they are supposed to enforce is completely, totally repugnant.

Might I just point out that "contemplating pulling the trigger" is not a substantive difference. Anyone can say they were contemplating something. Without documentation to prove that, legally there was no intent to do that. So - no difference in the two programs - at least not on that basis.

I've read Wide Receiver actually resulted in indictments, though the cases are probably still pending.

Has anybody heard or seen factual intent of F&F? I'm still very skeptical that the main intent was simply to create gun control stats...

I doubt we'll ever find out the real intent, unless somebody leaks the original documents. Short of that, I expect somebody to jump in front of the bus, or be thrown there, and that will probably end it all. I doubt we'll ever see jail time for any of them however, not matter what. And without somebody convinced they're going to do hard time, there won't be much incentive to divulge secrets. The promotions to get the ATF guys out of the area and out of the public view were designed to avoid that. Now that they're 'on ice', if they can be kept away from a special prosecutor, they're safe - and if they're safe they won't sing. So, no, I don't think we'll ever see the real intent of the program.

And just BTW, my guess is that gun control stats was just a side-benefit of F&F. I still think it was more like someone pocketing cash or something - although why they'd pay that kind of cash AND pay off anybody at the ATF for guns they can buy on the international black market for about $50 each is a mystery. There's got to be something REALLY stinky going on here....

Weren't most of these guns found to end up in the hands of one particular cartel? Maybe THAT is the key.

"Contemplating pulling the trigger".....let me be more direct, Wide Receiver had as an ojective of NOT losing control of the weapons in question. This was accomplished by "methods and means" to track the weapons at all times so as to have a "realistic probability" of arresting trafficor and ensuring that the weapons never reach the street.

F&F did not even "pretend" to maintain control of the weapons....they were not tracked and in some cases BATFE were "ordered" to backoff due to DEA/FBI "sources" being involved in the trafficing.

"factual intent" of the PURPOSE of F & F....that is what Issa & Grassely are SLOWLY getting to. With a major operation which supplied 2,500 high capaciy tactical weapons to an international cartel who, collectively, are responsibile for >40,000 deaths in the last 5 years (22,000 in past 24 months).....with NO VIABLE MEANS WHATSOEVER of tracing the weapons or re-securing control....

WHY? This violates any LE or BATF "logic or rationale."

The ONLY explanation is POLITICAL, and Holder's history and Obama stated ideology and actions (resent ORDER to border FFL's) is anti 2nd Amendment.

Expect F&F to "slowly" be exposed in Congress. Remember the Democratic Senate will NEVER allow investigation so any "demands" by Congress are null and void until 2013.

Should Obama get re-elected and the Senate go Republican (which it will)........ F&F would be used to stop Obama in a 2nd term, via a full expose of "blood on the administration's hands".....which would lead to impeachment or resignation!

In addition to the differences cited by others, to me the primary difference between Wide Receiver and F&F is that the Bush flunkies recognized that the program didn't work and shut it down before anyone died. F&F may have had a purpose, such as tracking guns to specific end users. The methodology was doomed to fail from the word "go." How anyone could track these illegally purchased weapons has never been, and probably can never be, explained. What we do know is that our tax dollars (more than a million of them) went into this "program" with no positive result. We know that multiple American law enforcement officers have died as a result of this failed policy. And we know that everyone in the chain of command is playing cover-up. I agree with Schweikert. Where is the general outrage? But there will be no general outrage unless and until the mainstream media starts telling the sheeple about the issue much more than they are now.

Yes, "importing" semi-automatic weapons to Mexico at the prices paid for this US contraban with "active" ICE and regulatory control BATFE vs. buying army surplus or new manufactured on the international market which is awash with these weapons into "Mexico" where one could unload a tanker off the coast with the LE "looking the other way" (assuming any LE was not already on the take with the cartels) begs credulity.

No F&F was purely POLITICAL and as it becomes apparent that Obama will lose ...OR the "new Congress" will impeach him for these actions, Federal Agents will "leak with reckless abondonment...at all levels".

Frankly, Waco almost "destroyed" BATFE.......F&F if fully exposed would secure its demise and responsibilities spread to other agencies.

So unless FBI wants to "chase cigarette diversion" or audit FFL's.......they better help keep "the lowest rung" in the Federal LE agencies intact!

Mainstream Media will NEVER report it unless Congressional Investigation "uncovered" what was really going on which would DEMAND prosecution and impeachment.

Again, ALL of America would be better served by having the "1st Black President" VOTED OUT instead of "impeached by the man".....IF YOU GET MY DRIFT.

Obama has and WILL (in this election)done MORE DAMAGE in race relations since King was murdered in 1968.

While I would like to see Holder prosecuted and Obama held accountable.......let the voters have the final verdict and make sure an F&F NEVER happens again.

After FINALLY having judicial "validation" of the 2nd Amendment three years ago (not bad since it was THE LAST of the Bill of Rights...1791.. to be "Affirmed"...), it is imperative to ensure that CONSERVATIVES are added to the Supreme Court because we will be facing 20 years of lawsuits attempting to "restrict" the 2nd amendment solely to the home and "what type" (Washington DC forbids semi automatics).

As long as you have "elites" seeking to restrict firearms, there will be attempts to do whatever is required to disarm the "subjects!"
