US defends gun sale reporting requirement in court

October 31, 2011

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com) — Gun store owners in southwestern border states recently argued in federal court that the Obama administration cannot require them to report when customers buy multiple high-powered rifles.

The Justice Department responded to a lawsuit seeking to block the two-month-old requirement by asking a judge to uphold its legality, arguing the measure could help stop the flow of guns to Mexican drug cartels.

It requires sellers in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to give the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives information about purchasers who buy two or more semi-automatic rifles greater than .22 caliber within five days.

U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer questioned whether monitoring lawful gun sales is an appropriate way to stop the flow of guns to Mexican gangs.

The US seems to be defending a lot of losing causes lately.

Now.....how hypocritical can things get? We have our Justice Department deliberately providing illegal firearms to the Mexican drug cartels in operations such as Fast and Furious, and that same Justice Department comes back and justifies the imposition of a new rule on gun dealers by saying that they are trying to "stop the flow of guns to Mexican drug cartels". What's wrong with this picture?

It's funny that they defend so many losing causes while the same losing causes are all federal programs. Or maybe that's "LOSER" causes? But of course they will try to defend themselves - how many criminals admit to guilt when there is a possibility of jail time?

Let's just hope the judge has been reading some of the reporting on F&F, and knows the cartels can buy their arms cheaper elsewhere.

When will you finally understand that the immutable rule is Do As We Say, Not As We Do? We are the government and we know what is best for you.

I feel like ever since LBJ, and starting with him, the federal government has been giving the citizens the "G.I. Hi-Sign", also known as a stiff middle finger. It's not about POTUSes, although they do it too, but the federal agencies are just totally out of control. I think we need to reach out and break that middle finger right off, and stick it up Uncle Sam's er, nose.
