Silence is Golden

In this newsletter, we are going to rejoice in 'silence' and right to remain the same. Why do you invoke the right to remain silent? Why invoke your right not to be questioned without your lawyer present? In a nutshell, the answer to this question is: What you say and do is evidence, what your attorney says is not, writes attorney T. Edwin Walker, Vice-President/Attorney, Walker, Rice & Wisdom, P.C.

Taking Down the AK-47

Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov is an impressive name for a Russian peasant who never went beyond the 9th grade. After leaving school, he went to work for the Turkistan-Siberian railway. After being drafted into the Red Army in 1938, he completed the Tank Mechanical School near Kiev. Combined with Kalasnikov’s innate intelligence, the experience he gained there enabled him to devise several improvements for armored warfare. These included a counter for the number of rounds fired from a tank’s main battery as well as a meter that recorded a tank’s running time. His inventiveness caught the attention of C.I.C. General Georgi H. Zhukov, and Kalashnikov was ordered to Leningrad where his inventions were put into practice.

Ten Essential 1911 Spare Parts to Have on Hand

February 23, 2011

Printer Friendly | Email |

(GunReports.com) -- Wilson Combat has a nice compilation of items to keep around if you have a 1911 pistol.

In addition to spare magazines consider keeping these 1911 spare parts on hand.

  1. Extra fitted extractor – a spare extractor is a great item to have ready if yours loses tension or you damage the hook-the extractor is a key component of 1911 reliability. Our bulletproof extractor will fit most quality 1911’s with minimal part fitting and adjustment.

  2. Extra recoil springs - Recoil springs should be changed at regular intervals to ensure reliability and frame protection (link to spring guidelines). Wilson Combat recoil springs are the best you can buy and come in

    Extra recoil springs
a wide variety of spring weights and sizes.

  3. Extra Firing pin springs – when a 1911 firing pin spring weakens, you can create a dangerous situation-make sure you replace spring every 5,000 rounds at a minimum with one of our extra power firing pin springs.

  4. Pin set with plunger spring – a quality, hardened pin set is mandatory in case a pin is lost during cleaning at the range or at your workbench. A plunger spring is equally nice to have if your plunger assembly “jumps ship” in the tall grass.

  5. Grip screws – Everyone buggers up grip screws! We have your choice of blued, stainless, hex, torx or slotted. Machined from bar stock and heat treated

    Extra Firing pin springs
to reduce damage, these quality screws will complement your fine pistol.

  6. Spare firing pin - If you lose or damage your firing pin while cleaning you will be glad you have one of our spare, drop-in bulletproof firing pins in your range bag!

  7. Spare firing pin stop – The most commonly broken part on a factory 1911 is the firing pin stop-we have a wide array of Bullet Proof firing pin stops to easily replace your factory MIM or cast part.

  8. Recoil spring plug - Commonly lost at the range or during dis-assembly. Your gun won’t run without one of these drop-in parts!

  9. Magazine catch lock and spring - make sure you have a spare-This part is

    Pin set with plunger spring
cheap insurance to have on hand. Consider replacing allen head magazine catch locks with a slotted.

  10. Extra Shok-Buffs – for frame protection during high-round count sessions Shok-Buffs offer cheap insurance against frame damage for your full-size 1911 pistols-changing them every 500-1000 rounds is recommended.

Excellent idea to have one (or more) of these packages on hand. Especially if you have a multiple 1911 count in the house.

Dang! That's a lot of potentially broken/weak parts for my 1911.

"Essential Glock Spare Parts to Have on Hand?" Ammo... lots of ammo.

RackEm - you're correct, 'cause if you get a KaBOOM on your Glock, you need a whole 'nother pistol anyway! ;)

I'm kind of surprised they don't have slide stops on their list - I've replaced dozens of them, and never had to replace the other parts mentioned, unless I felt like it.

Do they have a kit available, with lesser cost than buying each part separately ?

Dammit RackEm, I wanted to be the first to make the Glock joke, here I go away. The One Essential 1911 Spare Part to Have on Hand: A Glock Model 21.

Dang, Mike, that's funny!

Gaviota

This is a useful list. I need to start acquiring some of this stuff. So far my 1911 spare parts inventory consists of 2 extra mags.

Charles - it's a fine idea, though more important IMHO if you use a 1911 competitively or otherwise shoot it all the time. I think it's great marketing though! (I do replace recoil springs routinely on carry pieces, per the owners manual.)

Got both. 1911-A1 and G-21SF. It's a tough choice. Which to shoot bowling pins with????
