THINKING IT WOULD BE fun to get involved in Cowboy Action Shooting, and maybe do a little hunting with lever guns, I started on a quest for the appropriate hardware. For me, the commonly available calibers were too boring.

The first Remington Number 5 bears no resemblance to the new Remington Model 5. The two rifles differ as much as cats and dogs do. The old Number 5 was a rolling-block sporting and target rifle adapted to use smokeless powder ammunition. It was introduced in 1898, initially chambered for .30-30 Winchester, 7mm Mauser, .30-40 Krag, with .303 British added a few years later. The rifle flopped. Only 198 were sold before it went out of production in 1903. That was too bad for Remington but a good deal for anyone who owns a Number 5, as it would be a mighty nice collector’s piece today. I don’t think the new Remington Model 5 will suffer the same fate as the old Number 5. Right now, it’s a clip-fed bolt-action available in .22 LR and .22 WMR. I have few doubts that in the future it will be able to handle one or more of the .17-caliber rounds gaining popularity. While it wears “Remington” on its box and at the rear of the receiver, you’ll find “Zastava-Serbia” above and forward of the magazine housing. Zastava is the town; Serbia a former kingdom of the Balkans and presently part of Yugoslavia.

Blackwater Supports Training Restrictions

Blackwater Worldwide announced its support of AB2498, proposed legislation that would prevent prohibited persons from unlawful access to and possession of firearms.

This legislation would serve to hold all responsible firearms training facilities to a common standard, allow training of responsible citizens, and, hopefully, reduce firearms capabilities of dangerous criminals.

Blackwater, which recently opened a facility in San Diego County, has long supported a strict credential policy, requiring every student it trains to provide documented proof of their suitability for training and eligibility to possess firearms.

The company is committed to safe training on the use and handling of firearms, but is equally committed to ensuring that those firearms are in the hands of capable and confident citizens, not prohibited felons.

Blackwater is using a back door manuever here. They want ALL gun owners to be armed under BW's "strict creditial policy." I am familiar with their training procedures. MOST civilians and homeowners could NOT survive BW's training operations. Don't be fooled by a big name. Stick with 2nd Amendment rights which belong to all Americans, not those with special training by a multi-billion dollar corporation like BW.

BW needs to concentrate on training and leave 2nd A. rights and the decision on its Constitutionality with the Supreme Court. They (BW) may mean well, but legal and responsible gun owners in the USA, don't need them interfering with the US Constitution. Support it as written and don't try to rewrite history. Stick to operating your facility and doing your job, let the US Supreme Court do theirs...

I just read AB2498, and the first thing it states: Existing law regulates who may lawfully possess a firearm. Existing law also generally regulates firearm training facilities. Either Blackwater has no clue, or they are trying to mis-lead. Why?

Don't know the text of AB2498 but my old man trained me in the safe use of firearms...I think I was about ten years old at the time. Initial reaction is: we need more laws for this? I didn't realize former felons were signing up for courses.

Support of AB2498 is a BIG Mistake! Think about it. All of us with CCW permits will be required to go through a background check before taking our classes required to renew our permits. And this cancer spreads. In California an Assemblywomen (D) has proposed requiring a background check to purchase any firearms related item such as ammo, replacement parts, rifle scopes. This is a slippery slope.

For Glenn A -- I agree with your premise, buddy, but when you have a devious group like Blackwater determining how you and our familes should be trained to meet Blackwater "standards" I think we could be in a world or trouble. I support individual training by legal owners, but not by a devious group like Blackwater.
